ഡ്രൈവിങിനിടെ റോഡിൽ പെട്ടെന്നുണ്ടാകുന്ന അപകടസാധ്യതകളും തടസ്സങ്ങളും കൃത്യമായി മനസിലാക്കി അതിനനുസരിച്ച് സുരക്ഷിതമായി വാഹനം നിയന്ത്രിക്കാൻ പ്രാപ്തരാക്കുന്ന ഹസാർഡ് പെർസെപ്ഷൻ പരിശീലനമാണ് പുതിയതായി ഏർപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്. ഈ ഡിസംബർ 1 മുതൽ പുതിയ സംവിധാനം പ്രാബല്യത്തിൽ വരുമെന്ന് ഉത്തരവിലുണ്ട്.

In a major overhaul aimed at bringing down fatalities caused by poor driver judgment on roads, Keralam is set to become the first Indian state to introduce a computer-based Hazard Perception Test for driving licence applicants, bringing local standards on a par with several western nations.

The new computer test evaluates an applicant’s ability to spot road hazards in real time before they cause real-world crashes. Transport Commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam has made the test mandatory statewide from December 1.

The decision stems from the recognition that conventional yard and road tests fail to simulate critical risk scenarios. Key safety factors such as navigating sharp curves, driving through heavy downpours, dealing with night-time glare and reacting to sudden pedestrian or animal movement-cannot be safely or reliably recreated during a standard road test.

Under the new format, candidates will sit before a computer screen to watch 10 video clips, each a minute long, featuring up to two potential real-world hazards. Much like an interactive simulation, applicants must click a mouse or tracker the instant they spot a developing hazard, such as a child chasing a ball into the street or a vehicle abruptly pulling out of a side lane.

Out of 100 total marks, full points will be awarded for quick, timely click-responses, while delayed reactions will lead to deductions.

Candidates will have to secure at least 60% (60 marks) to qualify for the practical driving round. The test will expand the state’s driving evaluation into a four-part sequence: online learner’s test (Part I), the 30-day waiting period, computer-based Hazard Perception Test (Part II), and finally ground (Part III) and road tests (Part IV).

The initiative has been in the works for the last two years under the transport commissioner’s leadership as part of the MVD’s ‘Mission Zero’ campaign, which was launched in 2024 and targets high-risk groups, including pedestrians, motorcyclists and heavy vehicle drivers, to achieve zero road fatalities by 2040.

To ensure a smooth transition, the department will give people adequate time to adapt to the system. Authorised motor driving schools across the state have been directed to begin hazard perception training using open-source tools. Regional transport officers (RTOs) and joint RTOs will launch statewide inspections on October 1 to ensure driving schools have installed the necessary computer setups.

Air India Express has expanded its network at Zayed International Airport with direct services to Navi Mumbai, Indore and Lucknow, while flights to Guwahati are scheduled to begin on August 7, Abu Dhabi Airports said.

The additional services expand travel options between the UAE capital and major Indian cities amid growing demand from business and leisure passengers.

The Guwahati route will provide a direct connection between Abu Dhabi and India’s northeastern region.

“The addition of these new routes by Air India Express underlines our commitment to expanding Zayed International Airport’s destination network and serving the growing demand between the UAE and India,” Abu Dhabi Airports chief executive Ahmed Juma Al Shamisi said.

“By deepening our partnership with leading regional carriers, we continue to enhance choice for our passengers while supporting Abu Dhabi’s strategic tourism and economic objectives.”

Air India Express chairman Nipun Aggarwal said the UAE was one of the airline’s most important international markets, with Abu Dhabi playing a key role in its expansion.

“As we expand our network and induct more aircraft, we are strengthening connectivity, opening new opportunities for travellers, and offering our guests greater choice, convenient schedules, modern aircraft and the warmth of Indian hospitality,” Aggarwal said.

“Every step in our growth is focused on creating greater value for our guests while strengthening Air India Express’ position as India’s leading value airline.”

Air India Express, part of India’s Tata Group, operates more than 500 daily flights connecting 43 domestic and 16 international destinations across South, Southeast and West Asia.

Passengers booking Tatkal train tickets at railway reservation counters will no longer need to wait in lengthy queues as West Central Railway (WCR) is set to introduce a token-based system from August 1. The move aims to streamline the booking process, manage crowds better and improve transparency at counters.

How the new Tatkal token system will work
Under the new arrangement, passengers will first collect a token within a specified time window instead of standing in queues ahead of Tatkal booking hours. After receiving the token, they can return to the reservation counter during their allotted slot to complete the ticket booking process.

Railway officials said the system is expected to make counter-based Tatkal bookings more organised and reduce congestion at reservation centres.

Passengers will need to carry a valid government-issued photo identity card and keep details of all travellers ready while booking Tatkal tickets. Accepted identity documents include Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence, PAN Card and other government-approved photo IDs.

Tatkal token timings for AC, non-AC bookings
The token distribution schedule will follow the existing Tatkal booking timings.

or AC Tatkal bookings, tokens will be issued from 8:30 am to 9:00 am, while non-AC Tatkal tokens will be distributed between 9:00 am and 9:30 am.

Passengers receiving tokens will be able to complete their bookings during their assigned time slots without having to wait in multiple queues.

Initial token limit at reservation counters
In the first phase, each reservation counter will issue 10 tokens for AC Tatkal bookings and 15 tokens for non-AC Tatkal bookings.

The railway zone said the number of tokens may be increased depending on the response and requirements. Category B tokens will be issued for other general passengers or commercial requests and will be processed after Category A tokens.

If seats remain available after all token holders have completed their bookings, counters will allow walk-in passengers on a first-come, first-served basis.

The tokens will be non-transferable and will remain linked to the passenger who collected them.
