പശ്ചിമ ബംഗാളിൽ ക്രൈസ്തവ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രാർഥനാ യോഗങ്ങൾക്കും ആരാധനാലയങ്ങൾക്കും നേരെ തുടർച്ചയായി ആക്രമണങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നതായി ദേശീയ മാധ്യമമായ ദി ഇന്ത്യൻ എക്സ്പ്രസ് റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുന്നു ആക്രമണങ്ങളെ തുടർന്ന് പല സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും വീടുകളിൽ നടക്കുന്ന പ്രാർഥനകളും മതപരമായ സന്ദർശനങ്ങളും നിർത്തിവയ്ക്കുന്നതായ് വിവിധ ക്രൈസ്തവ സംഘടനകള്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചതായാണ് വിവരം.

ഹൗറയിലെ ഉലുബെറിയയിൽ ആഗസ്റ്റ് 23-ന് പ്രാർഥനാ യോഗത്തിനിടെ ഒരു സംഘം വീട്ടിലേക്ക് ഇരച്ചുകയറി പാസ്റ്ററെയും വിശ്വാസികളെയും മർദിക്കുകയും വീടിനുള്ളിലെ സാധനങ്ങൾ തകർക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതായി റിപ്പോർട്ടിൽ പറയുന്നു. ‘നിർബന്ധിത മതപരിവർത്തനം’ ആരോപിച്ചായിരുന്നു ആക്രമണം. പുരുഷന്മാരും സ്ത്രീകളും ഉൾപ്പെടെ അറുപതോളം പേരാണ് അന്ന് പ്രാർഥനയിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തിരുന്നത്. പൊലീസ് എത്തിയാണ് ഇവരെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തി ആശുപത്രിയിലെത്തിച്ചത്. സംഭവത്തിൽ എഫ്‌ഐആർ രജിസ്റ്റർ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഇതുവരെ ആരെയും അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തിട്ടില്ല.

ആക്രമണത്തെ തുടർന്ന് പ്രദേശത്ത് വീടുകളിലെ പ്രാർഥന നിർത്തിവച്ചതായി പാസ്റ്റർ മിഥുൻ ഹസ്ര പറഞ്ഞു.

ഇത്തരം സംഭവങ്ങൾ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടതല്ലെന്നും ബംഗാളിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ അടുത്തിടെ സമാനമായ നിരവധി സംഭവങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നും ബംഗാൾ ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ കൗൺസിൽ സ്ഥാപകൻ ഹെറോഡ് മുല്ലിക് പറഞ്ഞു. ഹൗറയിലെ ജഗത്ബല്ലവ്പൂർ, നോർത്ത് 24 പർഗാനാസിലെ ഹിംഗൽഗഞ്ച് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും പ്രാർഥനാ യോഗങ്ങൾക്കിടെ ആക്രമണങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായതായി അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.

പൂർബ ബർധമാനിലെ സഹനഗറിൽ നടന്ന ഒരു ക്രൈസ്തവ സംസ്കാരച്ചടങ്ങും ആൾക്കൂട്ടം തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തിയതായി റിപ്പോർട്ടിലുണ്ട്. മൃതദേഹം കുഴിമാടത്തിൽ ഇറക്കിയതിന് പിന്നാലെ ആൾക്കൂട്ടം അത് പുറത്തെടുത്തതായാണ് പള്ളി അധികൃതരുടെ ആരോപണം. പിന്നീട് മൃതദേഹം മറ്റൊരു സെമിത്തേരിയിലേക്ക് മാറ്റേണ്ടിവന്നു. എന്നാൽ സംസ്കാരത്തിനായി ഉപയോഗിച്ച സ്ഥലം സ്വകാര്യ ഭൂമിയാണെന്നും മരിച്ച സ്ത്രീ ആ പ്രദേശത്തുകാരിയല്ലായിരുന്നുവെന്നും ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടിയാണ് നാട്ടുകാർ എതിർത്തതെന്ന് പൊലീസ് വിശദീകരിച്ചു. ഭൂമിയുടെ രേഖകൾ പരിശോധിച്ചുവരികയാണെന്നും പൊലീസ് അറിയിച്ചു.

ആഗസ്റ്റ് 25ന് ഹൗറയിലെ ഘുസുരിയിലും ഒരു വീട്ടിൽ നടന്ന പ്രാർഥനാ യോഗത്തിന് നേരെ ആക്രമണമുണ്ടായി. വിശ്വാസികളെ മർദിക്കുകയും ചിലർക്ക് പരിക്കേൽക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതായി ചർച്ച് ഓഫ് ദ ഗ്രേസിലെ ഫാദർ സുരജ് സരോജ് ആരോപിച്ചു. സംഭവത്തിന് ശേഷം വീടുകളിലെ പ്രാർഥനകളും സന്ദർശനങ്ങളും നിർത്തിവച്ചതായി അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.

ആഗസ്റ്റ് 26ന് പൂർബ മേദിനിപുരിലെ ചെക്ക് മൈൽപോസ്റ്റ് ഗ്രാമത്തിലും സമാനമായ സംഭവമുണ്ടായതായി റിപ്പോർട്ടിലുണ്ട്. പാസ്റ്ററെയും ഭാര്യയെയും മർദിച്ച് പൊലീസ് സ്റ്റേഷനിലെത്തിച്ചതായാണ് ആരോപണം. ‘നിർബന്ധിത മതപരിവർത്തനം’ നടത്തുന്നുവെന്നായിരുന്നു ആൾക്കൂട്ടത്തിന്റെ ആരോപണം. പിന്നീട് അഭിഭാഷകരെത്തിയാണ് ഇരുവരെയും മോചിപ്പിച്ചതെന്നും റിപ്പോർട്ടിൽ പറയുന്നു.

അതേസമയം, ഇത്തരം പ്രതിഷേധങ്ങൾക്ക് പിന്നിൽ നിർബന്ധിത മതപരിവർത്തനം നടക്കുന്നതിനെതിരായ പ്രതിഷേധമാണെന്നാണ് സിംഹ ബാഹിനി പ്രസിഡന്റ് ദേബ്ദത്ത മാജിയുടെ വാദം. പണത്തിന്റെ പ്രലോഭനം നൽകി മതപരിവർത്തനം നടത്തുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും അത് അനുവദിക്കാനാകില്ലെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.

പ്രാർഥന ഓരോ വ്യക്തിയുടെയും മതപരമായ അവകാശമാണെന്നും ഒരാളുടെ വിശ്വാസത്തിൽ സർക്കാർ ഇടപെടില്ലെന്നും പശ്ചിമ ബംഗാൾ ആദിവാസി വികസന-ന്യൂനപക്ഷകാര്യ മന്ത്രി ക്ഷുദിരാം ടുഡു പറഞ്ഞു. എന്നാൽ നിർബന്ധിത മതപരിവർത്തനം നടക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ നിയമപ്രകാരം നടപടി സ്വീകരിക്കുമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

In several districts of West Bengal, Christian groups have suspended house prayers and visits following a series of attacks on prayer meetings, including one in Uluberia in Howrah over a week ago, where police had to rescue the pastor and the congregation.

There have also been reports of disruption of a burial in Purba Bardhaman, and vandalization of an under-construction church in Subhasgram in South 24 Parganas on July 5.

In a video that went viral, a mob entered a house in Uluberia on August 23 while Sunday prayers were on, and claiming “forced conversions”, beat up the gathering and ransacked the premises. Pastor Mithun Hazra told The Indian Express that like every Sunday, they had “rented a house for a prayer meeting, where around 60 people, men and women, were gathered”. “Prayers started around 11 am. At around 3 pm, a mob chanting slogans barged in. They assaulted me and others… ransacked the house, destroyed the sound system, podium, tables, chairs, and fans. They beat up men and women.”

The pastor said police rescued them and took them to hospital. “After treatment, we went to the police station and filed a complaint. Since that day, we have not held house prayers in the area.”

Superintendent of Police, Howrah Rural, Amit Verma confirmed receiving a complaint. “An FIR has been registered. Investigation is on.” No arrests have been made in the case.

Herod Mullick, founder of the Bangiya Christiya Pariseba (Bengal Christian Council), said what happened at Uluberia was “not a stray incident”. “There have been a series of such attacks recently… We are providing legal help to the victims, who are scared,” Mullick said, adding that last Sunday (August 30) too, incidents were reported during house prayers, at Jagatballavpur in Howrah and Hingalganj in North 24 Parganas.

On August 14, there was an attack on a gathering at the St Claret Church in Sahanagar, Purba Bardhaman district, with a funeral disrupted and mourners allegedly assaulted.

Parish Priest-In-Charge Father Samuel Hembrom told The Indian Express that the mob demanded “to see the papers for the burial ground”. “We said give us some time to get them from the church… we protested. But they did not allow the burial. The body had already been lowered into the grave, the mob took it out. The body had to be taken to another cemetery in Bardhaman town,” said Hembrom.

The Father said he sent a complaint to the Superintendent of Police and Block Development Officer by email. “Nothing happened.”

The SP, Purba Bardhaman, Pushpa, told The Indian Express: “The woman who died did not belong to the area. So people here objected and tried to prevent the burial. Locals also claimed the land where the burial was happening was not a cemetery but private land. We are checking the land records.”

On mourners being roughed up, the officer said: “I don’t think there was an assault. However, I will check with the local police station. There was a law and order problem and police priority was to control that.”

On August 25, an attack was reported on a prayer meeting at a house in Ghusuri in Howrah. Father Suraj Saroj of Church of the Grace said: “Community members were beaten up and some people were injured. I tried to reason with the mob, but they refused to understand.”

Saroj alleged that police made them wait for hours at the station, and then “enquired about the church, funds and credentials”. “We did not file a complaint. We have decided to suspend all house prayers, visits.”

Police refused to comment on the matter.

On August 26, a group gathered for a prayer meeting at a house in Check Milepost village in Purba Medinipur allegedly saw a similar incident, with the pastor and his wife beaten up and taken to the local police station.

“They were chanting slogans and said we were forcefully converting people… Our community members called up our lawyers, who came to the police station and had us released. Out of fear, we did not file a complaint,” Pastor Joy Sutradhar said over the phone. Later, Herod Mullick said, they filed a police complaint through email.

SP, Purba Medinipur, Angshuman Saha did not respond to calls.

Debdutta Majhi, the president of the Hindu right-wing Singha Bahini, one of the groups blamed for the attacks, said: “In Uluberia and other places, forced conversions with the lure of money are rampant. We are protesting against this. It cannot be allowed to continue.”

Kshudiram Tudu, the West Bengal Minister for Tribal Development and Minority Affairs, told The Indian Express: “Praying is a religious choice, and our government doesn’t believe in disturbing anyone’s personal beliefs. But if forced conversions – not those by choice – are happening, then law will take its course. One has the right to file a complaint.”

CPI(M) state secretary Md Selim said: “In other BJP-ruled states too, such things have happened. It is the right of the people to practise their religion, and we will fight to ensure this in Bengal.”

TMC spokesperson Pradeepta Mukherjee accused the BJP of doing “politics of fear”. “It has now become part of their job, to dub Muslims as foreigners and attack houses of Christian community members.”
