Conflict in Manipur Leaves Scores Killed, Thousands Displaced, and Churches Destroyed
India – Conflict in the Indian state of Manipur has left 98 people dead, 35,000 displaced, and 100 churches destroyed since violence broke out in early May, according to the UK-based news outlet Church Times.
International Christian Concern (ICC) has warned of rampant persecution of Christians in parts of India and trends away from religious freedom.
Ethno-religious conflicts and demonstrations have fueled the violence. The majority-Christian ethnic groups (primarily Kuki and Naga) held demonstrations against proposals to name the majority-Hindu Meitei group as a “Scheduled Tribe” (ST), a special classification for minority groups in India. The demonstrations escalated into violent confrontations between Naga and Kuki groups and the Meitei, causing Indian security forces to deploy to the region.
The situation in northeastern India is compounded by the civil war in Myanmar as the two countries share an open border agreement. One Meitei representative said that transnational illegal immigration, criminal organizations, and insurgent groups from Myanmar are root causes of the Manipur conflict.
Amit Shah—the Indian Minister of Home Affairs from the BJP (Bharatiya Janta Party) ruling party—recently visited Manipur to evaluate the crisis, announcing several judicial measures. Critics saw that government efforts made the situation worse.
As the conflict lingers, Christian leaders in Manipur raised concerns about the threat of persecution for believers. A local Church of England official noted that the “first target is always the church.”
The Archbishop of Canterbury called for the Indian local government to “protect all minority groups, including Christians and their places of worship.”

ചര്‍ച്ചിന്റെ നോര്‍ത്ത് അമേരിക്കന്‍ ഭദ്രാസനത്തിനുസമീപത്തെ പൊതുനിരത്തിലൂടെ പ്രഭാതസവാരി നടത്തുന്നതിനിടെ വാഹനം ഇടിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സമയം ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച വൈകീട്ട് 5.30-ന് ആയിരുന്നു അപകടം. തലയ്ക്കും വാരിയെല്ലിനും ഇടുപ്പെല്ലിനും ഗുരുതര പരിക്കേറ്റിരുന്നു.
ബിലീവേഴ്സ് ഈസ്റ്റേൺ ചർച്ചിന്‍റെ പ്രഥമ മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തയായിരുന്നു. അപ്പർ കുട്ടനാട്ടിലെ നിരണത്ത് സാധാരണ കർഷക കുടുംബത്തിലാണ് കെ പി യോഹന്നാന്‍റെ ജനനം. കൗമാരകാലത്ത് തന്നെ ബൈബിൾ പ്രഘോഷണത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിഞ്ഞു. 16-ാ വയസിൽ ഓപ്പറേഷൻ മൊബിലൈസേഷൻ എന്ന സംഘടനയുടെ ഭാഗമായി. 1974 ൽ അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഡാലസ്സിൽ ദൈവശാസ്ത്രപഠനത്തിന് ചേർന്നു. പാസ്റ്ററായി ദൈവവചനം പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ച് പിന്നീട് വൈദിക ജീവിതം. ഇതേമേഖലയിൽ സജീവമായിരുന്ന ജർമൻ പൗര ഗിസല്ലയെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്തു. 1978 ൽ ഭാര്യയുമായി ചേ‍ർന്ന് തുടങ്ങിയ ഗോസ്പൽ ഫോർ ഏഷ്യ എന്ന സ്ഥാപനം ജീവിതത്തിൽ വഴിത്തിരിവായി. സംഘടന വളർന്നതോടെ നീണ്ട വിദേശവാസത്തിനു ശേഷം തിരുവല്ല ആസ്ഥാനമായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കാൻ യോഹന്നാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.
ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള വിശ്വാസസമൂഹത്തെ ചേർത്തുനിർത്തി 2003 ൽ ബീലീവേഴ്സ് ചർച്ച എന്ന സഭയ്ക്ക് രൂപംന ൽകി. ആതുരവേസന രംഗത്ത് സഭ വേറിട്ട സാന്നിദ്ധ്യമായി. ചുരുങ്ങിയ ചിലവിൽ സാധാരണക്കാരന് ചികിത്സ ഉറപ്പാക്കാൻ തിരുവല്ലയിൽ മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജും തുടങ്ങി. ഇന്ത്യയിലുടനീളം സഭ കാരുണ്യ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ഏറ്റെടുത്തു. ദുരന്തമുഖങ്ങളിൽ കാരുണ്യ സ്പർശമായി. 2017 ൽ ബിലീവേഴ്സ് ഈസ്റ്റേൺ ചർച്ച എന്ന്പേര് മാറുമ്പോൾ ലോകമെമ്പാടും വേരുകളുള്ള ക്രൈസ്തവ സഭയുടെ പ്രഥമ മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്ത സ്ഥാനം കെ പി യോഹന്നാനെ വിശ്വാസികൾ ഏൽപ്പിച്ചു.

Ballia, Uttar Pradesh: An FIR has been registered against the principal and a teacher of a private school run by Christian missionaries in Ballia district for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, police said on Sunday.
The FIR was registered at the Rasda police station on Saturday on a complaint from the student’s father, they said. In his complaint, he has alleged that his son’s ‘shikha’ was cut by his teacher with a pair of scissors on May 2, police said.
The ‘shikha’ is a tuff of hair kept at the back of the head by a Hindu following tonsure.
The case has been registered against the principal and the teacher under sections 295A (malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings), 504 (intentional insulting a person) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammad Fahim Qureshi said.
The complaint stated that when the child’s mother went to the school to complain about it, the principal and the teacher threatened and hurled abuses at her.
