Pastor Gears Up For Potentially Historic Nationwide Baptism Event: ‘God Can Do Anything’

Published

on

A California pastor is on a mission to hold the biggest mass baptism in world history.

Mark Francey of Oceans Church in San Juan Capistrano, California, is gearing up for Baptize America, a one-day event June 8 he hopes will become the “world’s largest synchronized water baptism.”

It’s an ambitious effort that follows two previous events: Baptize SoCal and Baptize California. The former, held in 2023, saw nearly 4,200 baptisms, while the latter, which unfolded last year, saw more than 12,200 people be immersed.

Now, Francey wants to up the ante and take these local and state events national.

“We’re going to launch a nationwide movement,” Francey said. “We just believe that if God could do it here in California, He can certainly do it in Tennessee, or Florida, or some of the other great states.”

He continued, “We’re gearing up. We’re really, really excited for what God’s doing with this baptism movement.”

Francey is working across denominations and “boundaries” to unite Christians on one of the main elements on which the vast majority of Bible believers agree: baptism.

“I think that baptism could be a catalytic thing that we can all rally around, get excited about to mobilize the church to work together,” he said.

Francey’s efforts come as claims of Christian revival reverberate across the U.S. Reports of college students being mass baptized in the backs of pick-up trucks and the much-heralded Asbury revival — an event at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, in February 2023 that attracted people from across the globe and resulted in a non-stop church service that lasted two weeks — have made headlines.

Baptize America seeks to capitalize on this spiritual fervor, inviting churches across America to hold synchronized baptism events June 8.

Individuals are also welcome to register on the Baptize America website.

Francey said no one is more surprised by the success of his mass baptisms than he is, calling himself “probably the least likely candidate to try to do something like this.” But he believes he was called to step up to the plate with Baptize SoCal and help lead the movement — a call he has heeded.

And with that local event expanding to a state effort and now a national quest, he knows he made the right call.

“We’re just a bunch of nobodies that believe that God can do anything,” Francey said. “And when we tried to partner with God, He’s just created this divine momentum that we could never really reproduce.”

Francey is hoping to reach people who don’t normally go to church but who might be curious about the Bible and faith.

“We’re going to actually do a campaign that’s massive, basically inviting people that normally wouldn’t come to church to go, ‘Hey, do you want to get closer to God? Are you ready to take the next step? Get water baptized. It’s the largest synchronized baptism day in history. Be a part of it,’” Francey said.

‘I Found the Truth’: These Ex-Muslim Women Found Freedom After Supernatural Visits from Jesus

Published

on

Women’s rights – or the stark absence of them – within Islam have sparked heated debates for centuries. Yet, the issue reached a boiling point in September 2022, when the tragic death of Jina Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish-Iranian woman, shocked the world.

Arrested by Iranian authorities for allegedly wearing “improper clothing,” Amini was brutally beaten in a police van, taken to a detention center where she collapsed and, just three days later, succumbed to her injuries.

Her death ignited a wave of protests across Iran, as women defiantly took to the streets, raising their hijabs like banners, chanting “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” (“Woman, Life, Freedom”). The phrase echoed not just through Tehran but across the globe, as the world bore witness to a courageous uprising that demanded not just change but an entire shift in the fight for gender equality in the Islamic world.

Three former Muslim women gathered to dive deep into these issues in a powerful Roundtable discussion on a new program by “I Found the Truth”. It’s a ministry committed to sharing powerful stories of how Jesus is revealing Himself to Muslims worldwide through supernatural encounters like dreams and visions.

The new “I Found the Truth” Roundtable series creates a space for raw, honest conversation. Among the women were two Iranian-Americans who shared their personal journeys of seeking truth and confronting the harsh inequalities they faced as women within Islam. Yasra Larki, one of the women at the table, recalled how she was just nine years old when she was forced to start wearing the hijab in Iran – taught that even as a little girl, she was a temptation to men and thus must veil herself.

Larki reflected on the deep emotional struggle of being treated as less than human, as inferior to men. “I feel like when I look back, one of the hardest things I faced was knowing I didn’t have the same rights as men,” she shared. “It was like always being seen as less, as not worthy. Like a second-class human. Even in families, when a boy is born, there’s so much celebration. But when a girl is born, it’s not the same excitement. It’s just so sad.”

Larki was joined on the Roundtable set by Nikta Musselwhite, who was also born in Iran but immigrated to America when she was seven. After becoming dissatisfied with a life of drugs and New Age practices and being tormented every waking second, her mom sent her to Iran on a vacation to visit her extended Muslim family.

While in Iran, she saw Jesus standing in a blue robe in a church in her dream, and He said, “Follow Me” to Nikta. She Googled Jesus because she wanted to know if it was the Jesus of Christianity she saw in her dream. She eventually gave her life to Jesus and faced persecution from her Muslim family.

Samira Marikh hosts the women’s roundtable discussion. Marikh hails from the Netherlands, but her family is from Morocco. Marikh came to the Lord after a scary encounter at 29. She was lying in bed, and all of a sudden, a severe heat came over her whole body. She thought that she was going to die. She cried out “God, if you save me, I will do whatever You want.” A light filled the whole room, and the fire stopped.

When she woke up the next day, there was a peace she had never felt before, and it began a journey of searching for the truth. After eight months of reading the Bible and the Quran and trying New Age practices, Samira found the truth. She heard the voice of Jesus say “Samira, you can stop with this whole research, it’s Me that you’ve been looking for your whole life. The emptiness and longing you’ve been trying to fill with earthly stuff, it’s Me you’ve been looking for.” A wave of God’s love came over her, and she began to know Him more and more.

In line with US President Donald Trump’s stringent immigration policies in the US, the Labour government in the UK has launched a large-scale crackdown on illegal employment. Dubbed a “UK-wide blitz”, the campaign has targeted businesses such as Indian restaurants, nail salons, convenience stores, and car washes that employ undocumented migrant workers.

Under the direct supervision of Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, the Home Office recorded a record-breaking January, conducting raids on 828 premises — marking a 48 per cent increase from the previous year. Arrests also surged by 73 per cent, reaching 609.

According to Cooper’s office, while enforcement teams respond to intelligence on illegal employment across all sectors, a substantial portion of recent operations focused on restaurants, takeaways, and cafes, along with the food, drink, and tobacco industries. A single raid on an Indian restaurant in Humberside, northern England, resulted in seven arrests and four detentions, according to a PTI report.

“The immigration rules must be upheld and enforced. For too long, employers have been able to hire and exploit illegal migrants, and too many individuals have been able to work illegally without any consequences,” said Cooper. “This not only encourages dangerous Channel crossings in small boats but also leads to the exploitation of vulnerable people, abuse of the immigration system, and harm to the economy,” she added.

‘Show, not tell’ approach

With the rapid rise of Reform UK in the polls, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under pressure to demonstrate a tough stance on illegal immigration. His government is now using chartered flights to deport “immigration offenders” to various countries, including four of the largest deportation flights in UK history, collectively carrying more than 800 people.

Adopting a ‘show, not tell’ strategy, the Labour administration has drawn comparisons to Trump-era tactics by releasing TV footage of deportation operations. These clips depict deportees being escorted off buses and onto chartered aircraft. The individuals removed on these flights reportedly include criminals convicted of offences such as drug trafficking, theft, rape, and murder.

For the first time, the government has also shared video footage of migrants being deported, highlighting nearly 19,000 removals of foreign criminals and illegal migrants since Labour took office. The footage includes images of a man in handcuffs being escorted by multiple Border Force officers.

“We are also taking preventive measures to deter illegal entry into the UK by launching a global awareness campaign to expose people smugglers’ false promises. Social media adverts went live in Vietnam in December and Albania in January, featuring real stories of migrants who entered the UK illegally, only to face debt, exploitation, and a life vastly different from what they had been promised,” the Home Office stated.

Rise in ‘immigration raids’

Home Office statistics indicate that between July 5 last year and January 31 this year, enforcement actions targeting illegal employment and associated arrests increased by approximately 38 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. During this time, 1,090 civil penalty notices were issued, with employers facing fines of up to £60,000 per worker if found guilty of employing illegal migrants.

“These figures demonstrate my teams’ determination to enforce immigration laws and hold rule-breakers accountable,” said Eddy Montgomery, Director of Enforcement, Compliance and Crime at the Home Office.

“I hope this sends a clear message that no one can evade the law. We will continue ramping up operations to ensure that offenders face full legal consequences. Many people working illegally endure appalling conditions, and we are committed to safeguarding and protecting the most vulnerable,” he added.

As part of this initiative, Immigration Enforcement is also working with organisations to enable employees to report instances of labour exploitation.

In January, the government claimed it had surpassed its target for deporting foreign criminals and immigration offenders, reaching the highest removal levels since 2018. A total of 16,400 people have been deported since the July 2024 general election.

Border security, asylum and immigration bill

The crackdown comes as the Labour government’s Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill returns to Parliament for its second reading this week. The proposed legislation aims to dismantle the criminal networks that, according to the Starmer administration, undermine the UK’s border security.

The Bill is designed to give law enforcement enhanced powers to tackle organised crime groups at an earlier stage, including allowing authorities to seize mobile phones from individuals who enter the UK illegally, even before their formal arrest.

However, the opposition Conservative Party has criticised the Bill, labelling it a “weak measure that won’t stop the boats”. They have called for stricter rules regarding migrants’ access to permanent residency.

“Under MP Kemi Badenoch’s leadership, the Conservatives are putting forward effective and practical reforms to reduce immigration. Our country is our home, not a hotel,” said Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp.

One of the world’s foremost academics, Michael M Crow has been the president of the Arizona State University (ASU) since 2002, and was a speaker at last week’s ASU+GSV & Emeritus Summit in Gurugram – India’s biggest education event that got together thought leaders and innovators to explore transformative solutions for education in a world shaped by generative AI. Known for reshaping education in the 21st century, Crow talked to FE’s Vikram Chaudhary about student employability, education under Donald Trump, and why the ASU is so popular with Indian students. Excerpts:

Will study in America be impacted under the Trump administration, and the recent illegal immigrant crackdown?

Indian students need not worry about the ongoing crackdown on illegal immigrants. Campuses will be unaffected. The crackdown is not on students who are in the US with valid student visas.

How many Indian students are currently enrolled in the ASU?

Today, the ASU is one of the largest public universities in the US, with 80,000 students enrolled on campus and 65,000 online. With almost 6,600 Indian students currently enrolled, India is the top country of origin for the ASU’s international student community, and they are highly capable.

Capable in academics…

Capable in everything – they adapt to their new environments seamlessly. At the ASU, some Indian students have become leaders. Two of our student body presidents are from India. I have observed that Indian students usually don’t feel ‘left out’ – they run for elections, become campus leaders, get campus jobs, internships, etc.

And now Indian students can study the ASU’s global courses even in India.

How?

We have joined hands with several educational institutions in India, allowing students to pursue the ASU’s undergraduate and Master’s degrees in various disciplines. These institutes include Rajalakshmi Engineering College (Chennai), Anurag University (Hyderabad), Chitkara University (Punjab), and Shiv Nadar University (Greater Noida).

Indian students can study hundreds of courses at these partner institutes, utilising the ASU’s learning assets, and also get automatically admitted to the ASU, where they can pursue further studies – once they complete their course in India, they can come to the ASU for graduate training, and can also get OPT (Optional Practical Training) in the US and then come back to India. The opportunities are unlimited.

Have you also tied-up with Indian public universities?

We haven’t yet, but are looking forward to – as some of them are among the finest in the world.

Why is the ASU so popular with Indian students?

There are many reasons. The ASU is the top public university in the US for innovation (ahead of the MIT and Stanford). International students choose the ASU also because of the number of majors that we offer, the types of programmes we run, our speed of innovation, and one of the most diverse campuses in the world where everyone feels at home.

Coming to the summit that brought you to India, are India and the US the only places where the ASU+GSV & Emeritus Summit is organised?

Yes, while it started in the US in 2010, we brought it to India a few years ago. The US edition is the biggest education summit in the world, and the India edition is the biggest in the country and possibly in this part of the world, at least in terms of value-creation and quality of participants.
