US Ambassador to Israel Compares President Trump and President Morales of Guatemala to “Joshua and Caleb”
A group of more than 200 evangelical faith leaders, organized by the Latin Coalition for Israel, gathered at the Aish Hatorah World Center in the Old City of Jerusalem on May 15 to celebrate the one-year anniversaries of the American and Guatemalan embassies’ moves to Jerusalem.
The meeting, which overlooked the Western Wall plaza and the Temple Mount, was attended by US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman; First Lady of Guatemala Patricia Marroquín, the wife of President Jimmy Morales; and Guatemalan Ambassador to Israel Mario Bucaro Flores.
Speaking of the positive developments for Israel that have come about thanks to US President Donald Trump, Latin Coalition for Israel President Mario Bramnick likened him to Cyrus, the Persian king who permitted the Jewish people to return to Israel to build the Second Temple.
“As a Cuban American, I have never felt more proud to be an American than now having President Trump as our President. President Trump has done more to support the nation of Israel than any other President in the history of the United States,” Bramnick said.
Friedman likened him to the Biblical prophet Daniel, and extolled the group to do its utmost to support Israel and to spread that support to others.
He praised the group’s support for Israel, saying “to see how the Jewish people have so many friends is deeply moving, and I am deeply appreciative.”
“Not everyone thinks like us,” he added. “Not everybody appreciates the miracles we are living. I think people take much for granted.”
Bramnick pointed out that along with all the positive developments, Israel’s enemies are intensifying their efforts to harm the Jewish state. “We see these two forces moving simultaneously,” he said.
“We are seeing an unprecedented rise of anti-Semitism in the United States,” he said. “We’ve never seen synagogue shootings. We’ve never seen anti-Semitic cartoons in The New York Times. We’ve never seen an anti-Semitic congressman on the Foreign Affairs Committee. We’ve never seen the Democratic Party stand silent.”
He suggested that “communities as large as the evangelical community in the United States get up and make these complaints as much as possible. There is strength in numbers. Don’t be afraid to use that strength.”
At the same time, he voiced his faith in Israel’s ability to meet the challenges facing it. “Israel today, like it was thousands of years ago in history, is still facing formidable enemies in all directions. The risk is growing, but Israel’s strength is growing faster,” he said.
Friedman then spoke of the new forms of anti-Semitism taking hold around the world.
“We used to think of anti-Semitism in terms of Nazis and neo-Nazis,” he said. “Those are ugly and despicable people, but they’re easy to spot. The more difficult form of anti-Semitism that has emerged, not more lethal but more difficult, is anti-Zionism.”
It is anti-Zionism, he said, that “accounts to some extent for rocket fire that Israelis experience.”
To fight this new anti-Semitism, the ambassador said he recently “led a delegation of ambassadors from various European countries on the March of the Living from Auschwitz to Birkenau, trying to send the signal as powerfully as we could that the disease of anti-Semitism—and it is a disease—has to be eradicated.”
Commenting on growing anti-Semitism in America, Friedman said “there are people who hate Israel that are given platforms all over the United States. They apply double standards to Israel that they wouldn’t think of applying to other countries in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world.”
“We hate the violence, we hate the rejectionism”
In preparation for the Mideast peace proposal set to be released by the Trump administration, Friedman said the discussion on Israel and its relationship with the Palestinians “is too often presented as a zero-sum game—that someone has to win and someone has to lose. The issue is always put in political terms and almost never in human terms.”
“The politics of the Palestinian Authority and Hamas we are totally against,” he said. “We hate the violence, we hate the rejectionism. But we don’t hate the Palestinian people. And that message doesn’t get out enough. We can be strong Zionists, but we can be sure that every person of any religion that lives on this soil can have the human dignity that everyone should have under God.”
Guatemalan First Lady Marroquín told the audience in Spanish that she had just prayed at the adjacent Western Wall and “thanked God for the great privilege that He has given us to live in these times. Because He has chosen President Morales to serve his country, to do what is right” in moving the Guatemalan embassy to Jerusalem.
Friedman related his personal journey from son of a Long Island rabbi, to New York City lawyer, to ambassador to Israel. He took special note of the location of the gathering, calling it “a beautiful venue 100 yards from … the site where Abraham brought [his son] Isaac to the altar, and the place that David purchased for the nation of Israel—the place where David wrote so many Psalms.”
Speaking about a nearby archeological excavation at the City of David that has uncovered a pathway leading from a large pool to the Temple Mount, Friedman told the Christian leaders, “if you asked what is the probability that Jesus walked that pathway, archeologists would tell you: 100 percent.”
Friedman said he will attend an opening ceremony for this path in June together with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Citing the Biblical episode of the 12 spies, in which only two out of 12 spies sent into Canaan by Moses encouraged the Jewish people to enter the land, Bramnick said that “President Donald Trump and President Jimmy Morales are like Joshua and Caleb,” the righteous spies that urged the Jews to enter Israel.

14 Irigwe Christians Killed Days Before Christmas
Nigeria — On Sunday, Dec. 22, armed men killed 14 Christians, including a pregnant woman and a 1-year-old girl, shortly after a Christmas carol service at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA).
The attack, which occurred about 22 miles from Jos, Plateau state, is the latest against the Irigwe tribe in north-central Nigeria, a region grappling with conflict and vulnerability due to attacks by Islamic Fulani extremists. The community surrounding the church is home to about 1,000 Christians. Local leader Wuna Gado expressed his heartache, stating he had alerted military personnel at a nearby checkpoint about unusual activities but felt his warnings were dismissed.
The horrific attack resulted in the loss of entire families, prompting the community to hold a mass burial to honor their deceased. Among the victims were 1-year-old Sheba Ernest and her mother, Mary Stephen.
The Irigwe people, a predominantly Christian group, have faced ongoing adversity, including violence and displacement by Fulani ethnic militias, with more than 2,000 Christians killed since 2016. This recent incident adds to a troubling history of attacks that often coincide with significant Christian celebrations.

3 Christians shot, one severely wounded, in Christmas attack on pastor’s home
Three Christians were shot and wounded in a Christmas Day gun attack on the home of a pastor and televangelist in Lahore, Pakistan, sources said.
Following a Christmas Eve confrontation in which Pastor Shahzad Siddique tried to stop Muslims from harassing guests, the next day more than a dozen gunmen opened fire on Christians at a gathering outside his home in Lahore’s Maryam Colony, said Siddique, a Pentecostal preacher on satellite television channel Praise TV.
“I had just returned home from my church and was resting when unidentified motorcyclists opened fire outside my house,” Sidique told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News.
He called a police helpline, and an assistant sub-inspector and another officer arrived within 25 minutes; at the same time, some church members arrived for the planned Christmas festivities, he said.
“I was briefing the policemen about the firing incident when, all of a sudden, youths riding motorcycles came there and opened indiscriminate fire on us,” Siddique said. “Unfortunately, three people — my uncle, driver and a church member — sustained bullet injuries on the arm, stomach, and leg. We were able to catch one attacker while the others fled on foot, leaving behind five motorcycles.”
While Siddique’s Uncle, Arif Masih, and driver, Adnan Pervaiz, are not in critical condition, the third Christian, Akash Patras, remained in serious condition with a wounded abdomen, the pastor said. Police have arrested five suspects and were raiding sites to apprehend other assailants, he said.
“I believed that this country was safe for us, but now I’m forced to admit that it isn’t safe to be a Christian in Pakistan,” Siddique told CDI-MSN. “I’ve always preached peace and tolerance, but this unprovoked attack has shown that extremist elements do not want a peaceful society.”
Nasir Jameel, a neighbor of Pastor Siddique and member of his church, said the attack resulted from a minor altercation on Christmas Eve.
“Pastor Siddique was leading a rally comprising of church members, including young girls and women on Dec. 24, when a group of local Muslims riding a car started misbehaving with the participants,” Jameel told CDI-MSN. “Pastor Siddique and other elders confronted the Muslims and told them not to tease the congregants. This must have stoked anger in the Muslims and led them to plan the attack.”
Shehrbano Naqvi, assistant superintendent of the Police Defense Circle, said officers were making efforts to arrest all assailants.
“We will ensure that all those involved in this incident will be arrested and punished,” she said, confirming the arrest of the five suspects. “We have also deployed police security in the area to protect the Christian residents.”
Joseph Jansen of the rights group Voice for Justice described the attack as “deeply troubling and unacceptable.”
“This act of violence, driven by religious hatred, highlights a grave issue of intolerance and discrimination,” Jansen said. “The government of Pakistan must act decisively to hold accountable those inciting such hatred and attacking individuals and places of worship.”
Jansen expressed concern over a persistent culture of impunity in Pakistan that leaves religious minorities in constant fear of violence.
“Inaction against perpetrators has allowed extremist forces to thrive unchecked, further exacerbating the threat to vulnerable communities,” Jansen told CDI-MSN. “Pakistan’s failure to safeguard minority rights and prevent religious based violence also undermines its international commitments.”
Siddique called on officials to arrest all of the attackers and ensure that they’re punished in accordance with the law.
“I also appeal to the government to ensure the security of our community,” he said.
Violence against Christians in Pakistan has escalated in recent years. On Aug. 16, 2023, a Muslim mob attacked Christian neighborhoods in Jaranwala Tehsil, Punjab Province, torching multiple churches and homes of Christians after two Christian men were accused of writing blasphemous content and desecrating the Quran.
Of the more than 300 people arrested for the violence, only one is still in jail, with the rest walking free on bail due to a defective police investigation, rights advocates say.
Pakistan ranked seventh on Open Doors’ 2024 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian, as it was the previous year.
