3 Christians shot, one severely wounded, in Christmas attack on pastor’s home

Published

on

Three Christians were shot and wounded in a Christmas Day gun attack on the home of a pastor and televangelist in Lahore, Pakistan, sources said.

Following a Christmas Eve confrontation in which Pastor Shahzad Siddique tried to stop Muslims from harassing guests, the next day more than a dozen gunmen opened fire on Christians at a gathering outside his home in Lahore’s Maryam Colony, said Siddique, a Pentecostal preacher on satellite television channel Praise TV.

“I had just returned home from my church and was resting when unidentified motorcyclists opened fire outside my house,” Sidique told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News.

He called a police helpline, and an assistant sub-inspector and another officer arrived within 25 minutes; at the same time, some church members arrived for the planned Christmas festivities, he said.

“I was briefing the policemen about the firing incident when, all of a sudden, youths riding motorcycles came there and opened indiscriminate fire on us,” Siddique said. “Unfortunately, three people — my uncle, driver and a church member — sustained bullet injuries on the arm, stomach, and leg. We were able to catch one attacker while the others fled on foot, leaving behind five motorcycles.”

While Siddique’s Uncle, Arif Masih, and driver, Adnan Pervaiz, are not in critical condition, the third Christian, Akash Patras, remained in serious condition with a wounded abdomen, the pastor said. Police have arrested five suspects and were raiding sites to apprehend other assailants, he said.

“I believed that this country was safe for us, but now I’m forced to admit that it isn’t safe to be a Christian in Pakistan,” Siddique told CDI-MSN. “I’ve always preached peace and tolerance, but this unprovoked attack has shown that extremist elements do not want a peaceful society.”

Nasir Jameel, a neighbor of Pastor Siddique and member of his church, said the attack resulted from a minor altercation on Christmas Eve.

“Pastor Siddique was leading a rally comprising of church members, including young girls and women on Dec. 24, when a group of local Muslims riding a car started misbehaving with the participants,” Jameel told CDI-MSN. “Pastor Siddique and other elders confronted the Muslims and told them not to tease the congregants. This must have stoked anger in the Muslims and led them to plan the attack.”

Shehrbano Naqvi, assistant superintendent of the Police Defense Circle, said officers were making efforts to arrest all assailants.

“We will ensure that all those involved in this incident will be arrested and punished,” she said, confirming the arrest of the five suspects. “We have also deployed police security in the area to protect the Christian residents.”

Joseph Jansen of the rights group Voice for Justice described the attack as “deeply troubling and unacceptable.”

“This act of violence, driven by religious hatred, highlights a grave issue of intolerance and discrimination,” Jansen said. “The government of Pakistan must act decisively to hold accountable those inciting such hatred and attacking individuals and places of worship.”

Jansen expressed concern over a persistent culture of impunity in Pakistan that leaves religious minorities in constant fear of violence.

“Inaction against perpetrators has allowed extremist forces to thrive unchecked, further exacerbating the threat to vulnerable communities,” Jansen told CDI-MSN. “Pakistan’s failure to safeguard minority rights and prevent religious based violence also undermines its international commitments.”

Siddique called on officials to arrest all of the attackers and ensure that they’re punished in accordance with the law.

“I also appeal to the government to ensure the security of our community,” he said.

Violence against Christians in Pakistan has escalated in recent years. On Aug. 16, 2023, a Muslim mob attacked Christian neighborhoods in Jaranwala Tehsil, Punjab Province, torching multiple churches and homes of Christians after two Christian men were accused of writing blasphemous content and desecrating the Quran.

Of the more than 300 people arrested for the violence, only one is still in jail, with the rest walking free on bail due to a defective police investigation, rights advocates say.

Pakistan ranked seventh on Open Doors’ 2024 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian, as it was the previous year.

Nigeria — Yomi Adetula, a respected 54-year-old leader of the Celestial Church of Christ, Eagle Parish, in Ogun state, Nigeria, was shot during a morning service on Sunday, Jan. 19, by gunmen reportedly affiliated with a cult group targeting Christian communities.

The community admired Adetula for his devotion to prayer and community service and for serving as a commander in the Ogun State So-Safe Security outfit. Eyewitnesses recounted a distressing scene as three attackers entered the church and fired upon the congregation.

“Adetula was a man of God who dedicated himself to serving the community,” said Adewale Amos, a local community leader. “We face challenges from groups that oppose spiritual efforts, and we must advocate for greater awareness and collective action to protect the rights of Christians to worship freely.”

The Ogun State Police have confirmed the incident and are actively investigating to identify and apprehend those responsible. A statement from the Police Public Relations Office acknowledged the seriousness of the crime and affirmed their commitment to bringing justice to the affected community.

Nicaragua’s government has expelled over 30 nuns from three convents in its latest assault on detractors, and their whereabouts are unknown, a researcher and exiled media reported on Wednesday.

Martha Patricia Molina, a Nicaraguan lawyer and expert on matters concerning the Catholic Church, told AFP the women were “evicted from their monasteries” overnight by government agents.

It was not known if the nuns, mainly Nicaraguan, had left the country, said Molina, herself in exile in the United States.

Nicaragua has jailed hundreds of real and perceived opponents since former leftist guerrilla Daniel Ortega returned to power in 2007, quashing presidential term limits and seizing control of all branches of the state.

According to the United Nations, more than 300 people died in a crackdown on 2018 protests, which Ortega’s government denounced as an attempted coup.

Most independent and opposition media now operate from abroad.

One of them, the online news site Confidencial operating from Costa Rica, reported the nuns were expelled from convents in the capital Managua and two other sites.

The exiled La Prensa newspaper said the order the women belonged to had its credentials scrapped by the government in 2023 with other Church-linked NGOs.

Ortega and his wife, vice president Rosario Murillo, accuse the Catholic Church of supporting the 2018 protests.

A constitutional reform approved last year is due to come into effect within days, giving Ortega and Murillo absolute power over all affairs of state.

It allows for the media and the Church to be monitored for any allegiance to “foreign interests.”

Ortega’s Sandinista rebels toppled a US-backed dictatorship in Nicaragua in 1979.

He led the country until 1990 and returned to power in 2007 with a more moderate program.

But in recent years he has seized control of all branches of government and led a sweeping crackdown on groups he sees as a threat to his rule.

Hundreds of politicians, businesspeople, journalists, intellectuals, human rights activists and religious figures have been expelled from Nicaragua and stripped of their nationality since February 2023, accused of treason.

Pastor Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison for Distributing Christian Materials

Published

on

China — The drawn-out saga between the People’s Court of Shunde District in Foshan, Guandong, and the Shengjia House Church seems to be ending.

On Jan. 17, the People’s Court sentenced Preacher Deng Yanxiang to two years in prison. He is scheduled to be released in May because he has already served more than 18 months.

Preacher Deng Yanxiang joins four other members of his house church who have been imprisoned for alleged illegal business operations. The charges were tied to the church’s publications, including Daily Bible Readings and Interpretations, which were sold and distributed to locals.

These five Shengjia Christians were arrested in August 2023 for their Christian literature and materials. Local Christians have said that charges by local Communist officials for fraud and “illegal business operations” are frequently used against unregistered house churches throughout China.
