Think about what’s tied to your current bank account. Salary credits. EMI deductions. SIP mandates. Utility bill auto-payments. Netflix, LIC, insurance premiums — all sitting quietly in the background, routing through the same account month after month.

Now imagine a competing bank offers you better interest rates, lower charges, or a genuinely superior app. Can you move? Technically yes. Practically, no — not without weeks of manually updating every single payment instruction. That friction is exactly what the Reserve Bank of India is now working to eliminate.

The RBI has placed bank account portability at the centre of its Payments Vision 2028, with plans to introduce a system that lets customers shift banks without losing their standing payment instructions. According to a Times of India report, the mechanism being developed is called the Payments Switching Service — and it could fundamentally change how Indians relate to their banks.

Why Bank Accounts in India Are Hard to Switch
Savings accounts in India are what banking professionals call “sticky.” Not because customers love their bank, but because leaving is genuinely painful.

Salary accounts are linked to employer payroll systems. Home loan EMIs are tied to auto-debit mandates. Insurance premiums, SIPs, credit card bill payments, subscriptions — each one is an instruction embedded in a specific account. Moving to another bank doesn’t just mean opening a new account. It means tracking down every single active mandate and updating it individually, often with multiple institutions, forms, and waiting periods involved.

Most customers don’t bother. And banks know this. That’s the stickiness — not loyalty, just inertia born from complexity.

RBI Payments Switching Service Explained: How Bank Account Portability Will Work
The RBI’s proposed fix is a centralised interface — referred to as the Payments Switching Service — that would sit above individual banks and consolidate all of a customer’s payment mandates in one place.

Through this interface, a customer would be able to view all their incoming and outgoing payment instructions across accounts and migrate them in bulk to a new bank. The entire process of switching, which currently takes weeks of manual coordination, could be handled through a single platform.

This is the banking equivalent of mobile number portability. When telecom regulators introduced number portability, customers could switch carriers without changing their phone number. The RBI is applying the same logic to bank accounts — your financial identity doesn’t have to be locked to one institution.

RBI Payments Vision 2028: Future of Digital Payments and Banking in India
RBI’s Payments Vision 2028 goes well beyond account portability. It reflects a broader strategic shift — placing consumer empowerment and reduced friction at the centre of how India’s payment ecosystem develops over the next few years.

The account portability initiative is one piece. Another is the push to make cross-border payments faster, cheaper, and more accessible — an area where India, like most countries, still has significant gaps. International transfers remain slow, expensive, and opaque compared to domestic UPI transactions, and the RBI has committed to a comprehensive review of the regulatory, operational, and technological bottlenecks involved.

That review is explicitly aimed at aligning India’s domestic systems with global standards shaped by the G20’s cross-border payments roadmap. India has already linked its fast payment infrastructure with several countries through bilateral agreements, and the Vision 2028 plan accelerates that work.

The broader framework also includes continued development of India’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), with a focus on expanding its acceptance and functionality as part of the payment ecosystem rather than treating it as a separate track.

Cross-Border Payments in India: Challenges and RBI’s 2028 Solution Plan
Sending money abroad from an Indian bank account is, to put it plainly, still a frustrating experience. Transactions take one to five business days. Fees can be substantial. Exchange rate transparency varies. And the compliance requirements — FEMA declarations, purpose codes, documentation — add friction that discourages even legitimate transactions.

The RBI’s cross-border review under Payments Vision 2028 acknowledges this directly. The plan isn’t to bypass regulatory requirements — those exist for legitimate reasons — but to remove unnecessary operational friction and modernise the infrastructure that currently slows things down.

UPI’s international expansion is part of this. Its linkage with Singapore’s PayNow, the UAE’s payment network, and several other systems has already shown what’s possible when domestic fast payment rails are extended across borders. Vision 2028 looks to widen and deepen those connections.

What RBI’s Bank Account Portability Means for Customers Today
Practically speaking, nothing changes today. The Payments Vision 2028 is a framework — a direction the RBI has set — not a product that’s live.

Honestly, a firm timeline for when the Payments Switching Service will be available to consumers hasn’t been confirmed yet. The RBI has signalled intent, but the actual rollout will depend on regulatory groundwork, bank system integration, and the kind of testing that takes time.

What’s worth noting is that the problem being targeted is real. Millions of Indian bank customers are effectively locked into accounts they’d move away from if switching weren’t so cumbersome. The RBI has named that problem explicitly — that’s not nothing. Regulatory acknowledgement of a friction point is usually the first step before anything actually gets built.

Bank Account Portability FAQs: Everything You Need to Know
How do I switch banks in India without losing all my auto-payments?
Right now, there’s no easy way — and that’s precisely the problem the RBI is trying to address. Currently, switching your primary bank account means manually contacting each institution that holds an auto-debit mandate against your account: your employer for salary, your lender for EMI, your insurer, your mutual fund platform, and so on. Each has its own process and timeline. The proposed Payments Switching Service would centralise all of this into a single interface, letting you migrate mandates in bulk. Until that system is live, the most practical approach is to maintain your old account active during a transition period while gradually shifting mandates to the new one — typically over two to three months.

What is the RBI Payments Switching Service and when will it launch?
The Payments Switching Service is a centralised platform the RBI intends to build as part of its Payments Vision 2028 plan. It would allow bank customers to view all active payment mandates — incoming and outgoing — and transfer them to a different bank without manual intervention at each institution. No official launch date has been announced. The RBI has committed to a review of the regulatory and technological requirements, but implementation timelines for infrastructure of this scale in India typically run two to four years from policy announcement to consumer availability. Keep an eye on RBI circulars and annual payment system reports for concrete updates.

Why is it so difficult to change my salary account even when a better bank is available?
Salary accounts are particularly sticky because the link isn’t just between you and your bank — it’s between your employer’s payroll system and your bank. Your employer’s HR or finance team has to initiate a change at their end, which involves internal approvals and sometimes technical integrations. On top of that, any linked mandates — credit card autopay, loan EMIs, SIPs — each require separate updates with separate institutions. The RBI has explicitly called this “stickiness” a problem worth solving. The Payments Switching Service is specifically designed to decouple your payment identity from any single bank, though it won’t necessarily change the employer-side payroll link on its own.

Will RBI bank account portability work exactly like mobile number portability?
The analogy is useful but not perfect. Mobile number portability lets you keep the same number while switching carriers — a clean, single identifier that follows you. Bank account portability is more complex because there are many more attached instructions: dozens of payment mandates tied to dozens of institutions, each with their own systems. The RBI’s approach isn’t to give you a portable account number (at least not as currently described) — it’s to make it easy to migrate all your standing instructions to a new account number at a different bank. The outcome is similar: you can switch without losing your financial continuity. The mechanics underneath are different. Practical tip: think of it less like number portability and more like forwarding all your mail when you move house — same result, different process.

Can I keep my existing account number if I switch banks under this new plan?
Based on what’s been announced, the RBI’s plan doesn’t involve transferring your existing account number to a new bank. Account numbers are bank-specific identifiers, and changing that would require a much deeper restructuring of banking infrastructure. What the Payments Switching Service would allow is migrating your payment mandates — the instructions to send and receive money — to a new account at a different bank. Your old account number stays with your old bank, but your financial life moves with you. The distinction matters practically: anyone who has your current account number saved for transfers (family, clients, employers) would need to be updated with your new details.

How RBI Is Transforming India’s Payment Ecosystem for the Future
The account portability proposal sits inside something larger. India spent the last decade building payment infrastructure — UPI, IMPS, NACH, FASTag, now CBDC — and those systems have genuinely transformed how money moves domestically.

What Vision 2028 signals is that the next phase isn’t just about adding new rails. It’s about reducing the friction that still exists for users navigating those rails — switching banks, sending money abroad, managing multiple mandates across institutions, understanding what’s happening to their money in real time.

The RBI is essentially asking: now that we’ve built this, are customers actually free to use it on their own terms? Account portability is one answer to that question. The cross-border payments review is another. The CBDC expansion is a third.

None of it arrives overnight. But the direction is clear — and for most Indian bank customers, it’s a direction worth watching

Google is changing what its free and paying Gemini users can actually do with the app. From October 9, people using Gemini without a subscription will be locked out of two models they currently have access to. Those paying for AI Plus will also lose a model, even though they pay for the service.

At the same time, Google is sweetening the deal for its higher tiers. AI Pro subscribers, who pay $19.99 a month, will now get Deep Think, a feature that was earlier kept only for the priciest plans. So while the free and mid tier users are losing ground, the paid tiers above them are gaining more.

Right now, free users can access Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro models inside the Gemini app. From October 9, that changes. Free users will only be able to use Flash-Lite. AI Plus subscribers will keep Flash-Lite and Flash, but lose Pro. AI Pro and AI Ultra users are not affected on model access, and they also get Deep Think added to their plan.

Google has said AI Plus users will get an email telling them exactly when the change kicks in for their account. Free users do not get that same notice, since the change applies to everyone on October 9 itself.

What Will Free Users Miss Out On

This is the part that will sting the most for free users. Flash and Pro are the models that handle longer, more complex requests well. Pro in particular is built for tasks that need deeper reasoning, like working through a multi-tep problem or handling a long document.

Flash-Lite, the model free users are left with, is built for speed and low cost, not depth. It can still answer everyday questions, summarise short text and handle quick back and forth chat. But for anything that needs the model to think longer or handle a complicated prompt, free users will likely notice the drop in quality.

What AI Plus Users Give Up

AI Plus users are not getting cut down to the free tier, but they are losing something they had. Pro access disappears for them too. They keep Flash, which is a solid middle ground model, good for most daily tasks and reasonably quick with answers. What they will miss is Pro’s ability to work through harder, longer tasks with more care.

For 4.99 dollars a month, AI Plus users are now left with a tier that looks closer to the free plan than before, just with Flash added on top of Flash-Lite.

What AI Pro And AI Ultra Users Gain

This is where Google is clearly steering people. AI Pro and AI Ultra users keep every model, Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro, with no cuts at all. On top of that, AI Pro users now get Deep Think, a reasoning mode built for tasks that need the model to work through multiple possibilities in parallel before giving an answer.

Deep Think was earlier only available on the costlier 99.99 and 199.99 dollar a month plans. Bringing it down to the $19.99 AI Pro tier makes that plan look a lot more attractive, especially for anyone who was on the fence about upgrading from AI Plus.

What Are Effort Levels

Alongside the model changes, Google is also rolling out low, medium and high effort levels for each available model this month. Picking a higher effort level should mean a more thorough answer, but it will also eat into a user’s weekly usage limit faster. This is similar to what is already available in Google AI Studio and Antigravity, so Google seems to be bringing that same control to the regular Gemini app.

Right now, users only have a simple toggle for extended thinking. The new effort levels will let people fine tune how much reasoning they want on a case by case basis, instead of a flat on or off switch.

What Led To These Changes

These model restrictions build on a bigger shift Google made earlier this year. In May, Gemini moved to compute based usage limits that refresh every five hours, with a weekly cap on top of that. Paid users were given higher limits than free users, and features like media generation, Deep Research, the Pro model and extended thinking were flagged as the ones that use up a person’s limit fastest. Those limits were extended to users under 18 in July.

Google has also just started rolling out Gemini 4 Argon, but only for AI Ultra subscribers for now. It has not said whether Argon will be treated as a Pro level model or placed in a tier of its own, which leaves open questions about what AI Pro users will eventually get access to.

UPI Transactions Decline In September Ahead Of New MDR Fee: RBI Data
Ahead of the implementation of new merchant discount rate (MDR) fee on high-value UPI payments for merchants, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions have declined by 1.8 per cent in September compared to that in August, as per data released by the Reserve Bank on Thursday.

A total of 2,450 crore UPI transactions were recorded in August, while it dipped to 2,407 crore transactions in September.

The overall value of the transactions on the platform also declined by 1.50 per cent to Rs 29.37 lakh crore in September from Rs 29.82 lakh crore in August, the data showed.

However, industry watchers attributed the decline to the fact that August has 31 days versus 30 in September. They pointed out that the average transactions per day were higher in September at 802 million versus August’s 791 million.

The IMPS platform, also run by NPCI, witnessed 35.40 crore transactions in which 7.05 lakh crore of value was involved, the September data release by the RBI said.

The RBI-operated RTGS (real time gross settlement) platform witnessed 3.25 crore transactions with a value of Rs 235.71 lakh crore in September, while the NEFT platform saw 86.2 crore transactions in volume and Rs 46.75 lakh crore in value, the data showed.

Meanwhile, the All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) called for a nationwide ‘No UPI Day’ protest on October 2 against the proposed 0.4 per cent MDR on UPI transactions above Rs 2,000, saying the charge would put additional burden on small retailers.

As part of the protest, retailers across the country will cover UPI QR codes, sound boxes and payment scanners with black cloth to symbolically register their opposition to the proposed charge, the association said in a statement.

Ending nearly six years of fully free UPI payments, the government has introduced a 0.4 per cent fee on transfers worth over Rs 2,000 made to merchants through the UPI platform from October 15 while explicitly ring-fencing everyday person-to-person transactions and small payments from any charge.

The MDR will be capped at Rs 300 for payments of Rs 75,000 and above.

Essential and thin-margin sectors — railways, telecom, insurance, fuel and agricultural inputs — will pay a flat MDR of Rs 5 per transaction above Rs 2,000.

Payments into mutual funds, securities and through stockbrokers and dealers will attract 0.02 per cent MDR, also capped at Rs 300.

Person-to-person (P2P) transfers — which make up 37 per cent of UPI’s transaction volume and 70 per cent of its transaction value — will continue to attract zero charges, irrespective of size.

Apple Pay is available for users in India across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, with support for Mac coming soon.1 The launch brings Apple customers an easy, secure, and private way to pay in stores, in apps, and on the web at retailers of all sizes — all without the need to type in PINs or use OTPs at checkout. Customers with Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards can add their cards to Apple Pay and use them at thousands of in-store and online merchants across India, as well as anywhere that accepts NFC transactions.

“India is home to a dynamic and digitally savvy population that continues to embrace a cashless future while expecting the highest standards of security and privacy, and we’re so excited to bring Apple Pay to users in India today,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “Apple Pay makes everyday payments with a card easy, secure, and private — from simply tapping to pay in stores without an extra app, PIN, or OTP to checking out online without repeatedly entering payment information.”

“We are at a significant inflection point in payments, where technology, security and changing customer expectations are reshaping how people transact. At Axis Bank, our aspiration is to remain at the forefront of this transformation by building payment experiences that are progressive, trusted and deeply relevant to our customers,” said Amitabh Chaudhry, MD & CEO, Axis Bank. “The introduction of Apple Pay advances this ambition, bringing greater choice and flexibility to our Credit Card customers, with support across the Mastercard and Visa networks. As payments become increasingly embedded in customers’ everyday digital lives, our focus is on bringing together innovation and trust, while making every interaction more intuitive and relevant. More importantly, this reflects our vision of a more connected and sophisticated payments ecosystem, where technology enables convenience and confidence in every transaction.”

“As India’s digital economy accelerates and consumers seek seamless and secure payment experiences, the introduction of Apple Pay for our Axis Bank-issued Mastercard credit card holders ushers in a new era of contactless commerce, giving Indian consumers greater confidence and peace of mind with every transaction,” said Gautam Aggarwal, Mastercard’s president of India and South Asia. “With Mastercard’s tokenisation technology, every Apple Pay transaction is protected by a unique, cryptographically secured token, ensuring card details are never shared with merchants, safeguarding consumers against fraud.”

“The launch of Apple Pay in India marks an important milestone in the evolution of the country’s digital payments journey,” said Suresh Sethi, Visa’s group country manager of India and South Asia. “By bringing together Apple’s intuitive consumer experience with Visa’s trusted global network and tokenisation capabilities, Apple Pay brings consumers in India a simpler, safer, and more seamless way to pay. Together, we are expanding consumer choice and helping shape the next generation of commerce in India.”

Delivering a Secure and Private Payment Experience
Security and privacy are at the core of Apple Pay. When customers use a card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device or on Apple servers, nor are they shared by Apple with the merchant. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted, and securely stored in the Secure Element, an industry-standard certified chip designed to store the payment information safely on the device.
Apple does not retain transaction information that can be tied back to the user. Their transactions stay between the user, the merchant, and their bank or card issuer. If a user’s iPhone is lost or stolen, they can use the Find My app to quickly locate, lock, or suspend payments from that device.

How to Use Apple Pay
Apple Pay is easy to set up. Customers can add a card directly to Apple Wallet via the latest version of the Axis Bank app. Alternatively, simply open the Wallet app on iPhone, tap the plus sign, and follow the steps to add an eligible card. Once a user adds a card to their Apple device, they can start using Apple Pay right away.

Using Apple Pay in stores is seamless and easy. Simply double-click the side button or Home button; authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode if prompted; and hold the top of the iPhone or display of the Apple Watch near the contactless reader to pay.
Users can also make purchases with Apple Pay on iPhone and iPad — with support for Mac coming soon — for faster and more convenient payments in apps or on the web without having to create accounts or repeatedly type in contact information, card details, or shipping and billing information.
When using Apple Pay, users will continue to earn the rewards and benefits offered by their cards.

At launch, Apple Pay will be accepted by millions of merchants across India, including at Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Comet, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Le15 Patisserie, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg, Zomato, and more. Apple has worked closely with payment service providers (PSPs) — like BillDesk, Cashfree, Juspay, Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs, Razorpay, and more — to bring Apple Pay to their merchant networks in India, with even more merchants and apps coming over time.

Today Apple Pay is available in more than 90 countries and regions, and works with more than 11,000 bank and network partners worldwide.
