Google Maps could soon do much more than guide users to nearby restaurants. Google is reportedly developing a Gemini powered food ordering feature that would allow people to search for meals using natural language and place orders directly through the app. The feature has been spotted in the latest Android beta version of Google Maps, but Google has not officially announced a launch date.
The upcoming feature appears to build on Ask Maps, Google’s conversational search tool introduced earlier this year. Powered by Gemini, Ask Maps already allows users to ask detailed questions such as where to find family friendly restaurants, quiet cafes or late night dining options. The new discovery suggests Google wants to take the next step by letting the AI complete the ordering process as well.
The feature was uncovered during an APK teardown of Google Maps version 26.27.00.941319029 for Android. Developers found code strings reading “Ask Maps to order food” along with prompts such as “Say what you’re craving” and “Maps will order for you, even while you’re on the go.” APK teardowns reveal features being tested inside app code, although they do not guarantee a public release.
If introduced, users could simply type or speak requests such as “Order a vegetarian pizza nearby” or “Find spicy noodles for pickup,” allowing Gemini to recommend suitable restaurants and begin the ordering process. Reports suggest the system is designed to help commuters and travellers place pickup orders while they are already heading to their destination.
Several details remain unclear. Google has not confirmed which restaurant partners or ordering platforms would support the feature, whether it would offer delivery or only pickup, or if it would work on all Android devices. Reports also indicate that payment approval would still require user confirmation, helping prevent unauthorised purchases.
The development fits Google’s broader strategy of making Gemini capable of completing real world tasks instead of simply answering questions. Since March, Ask Maps has expanded Google’s AI powered mapping experience by offering personalised recommendations and helping users plan trips through natural conversations. A food ordering tool would extend that vision by allowing the assistant to carry out actions within the app itself.
For now, the feature remains under development, and users will to wait for an official announcement from Google before it becomes available.

UPI Transactions Decline In September Ahead Of New MDR Fee: RBI Data
Ahead of the implementation of new merchant discount rate (MDR) fee on high-value UPI payments for merchants, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions have declined by 1.8 per cent in September compared to that in August, as per data released by the Reserve Bank on Thursday.
A total of 2,450 crore UPI transactions were recorded in August, while it dipped to 2,407 crore transactions in September.
The overall value of the transactions on the platform also declined by 1.50 per cent to Rs 29.37 lakh crore in September from Rs 29.82 lakh crore in August, the data showed.
However, industry watchers attributed the decline to the fact that August has 31 days versus 30 in September. They pointed out that the average transactions per day were higher in September at 802 million versus August’s 791 million.
The IMPS platform, also run by NPCI, witnessed 35.40 crore transactions in which 7.05 lakh crore of value was involved, the September data release by the RBI said.
The RBI-operated RTGS (real time gross settlement) platform witnessed 3.25 crore transactions with a value of Rs 235.71 lakh crore in September, while the NEFT platform saw 86.2 crore transactions in volume and Rs 46.75 lakh crore in value, the data showed.
Meanwhile, the All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) called for a nationwide ‘No UPI Day’ protest on October 2 against the proposed 0.4 per cent MDR on UPI transactions above Rs 2,000, saying the charge would put additional burden on small retailers.
As part of the protest, retailers across the country will cover UPI QR codes, sound boxes and payment scanners with black cloth to symbolically register their opposition to the proposed charge, the association said in a statement.
Ending nearly six years of fully free UPI payments, the government has introduced a 0.4 per cent fee on transfers worth over Rs 2,000 made to merchants through the UPI platform from October 15 while explicitly ring-fencing everyday person-to-person transactions and small payments from any charge.
The MDR will be capped at Rs 300 for payments of Rs 75,000 and above.
Essential and thin-margin sectors — railways, telecom, insurance, fuel and agricultural inputs — will pay a flat MDR of Rs 5 per transaction above Rs 2,000.
Payments into mutual funds, securities and through stockbrokers and dealers will attract 0.02 per cent MDR, also capped at Rs 300.
Person-to-person (P2P) transfers — which make up 37 per cent of UPI’s transaction volume and 70 per cent of its transaction value — will continue to attract zero charges, irrespective of size.

Apple Pay is available for users in India across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, with support for Mac coming soon.1 The launch brings Apple customers an easy, secure, and private way to pay in stores, in apps, and on the web at retailers of all sizes — all without the need to type in PINs or use OTPs at checkout. Customers with Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards can add their cards to Apple Pay and use them at thousands of in-store and online merchants across India, as well as anywhere that accepts NFC transactions.
“India is home to a dynamic and digitally savvy population that continues to embrace a cashless future while expecting the highest standards of security and privacy, and we’re so excited to bring Apple Pay to users in India today,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “Apple Pay makes everyday payments with a card easy, secure, and private — from simply tapping to pay in stores without an extra app, PIN, or OTP to checking out online without repeatedly entering payment information.”
“We are at a significant inflection point in payments, where technology, security and changing customer expectations are reshaping how people transact. At Axis Bank, our aspiration is to remain at the forefront of this transformation by building payment experiences that are progressive, trusted and deeply relevant to our customers,” said Amitabh Chaudhry, MD & CEO, Axis Bank. “The introduction of Apple Pay advances this ambition, bringing greater choice and flexibility to our Credit Card customers, with support across the Mastercard and Visa networks. As payments become increasingly embedded in customers’ everyday digital lives, our focus is on bringing together innovation and trust, while making every interaction more intuitive and relevant. More importantly, this reflects our vision of a more connected and sophisticated payments ecosystem, where technology enables convenience and confidence in every transaction.”
“As India’s digital economy accelerates and consumers seek seamless and secure payment experiences, the introduction of Apple Pay for our Axis Bank-issued Mastercard credit card holders ushers in a new era of contactless commerce, giving Indian consumers greater confidence and peace of mind with every transaction,” said Gautam Aggarwal, Mastercard’s president of India and South Asia. “With Mastercard’s tokenisation technology, every Apple Pay transaction is protected by a unique, cryptographically secured token, ensuring card details are never shared with merchants, safeguarding consumers against fraud.”
“The launch of Apple Pay in India marks an important milestone in the evolution of the country’s digital payments journey,” said Suresh Sethi, Visa’s group country manager of India and South Asia. “By bringing together Apple’s intuitive consumer experience with Visa’s trusted global network and tokenisation capabilities, Apple Pay brings consumers in India a simpler, safer, and more seamless way to pay. Together, we are expanding consumer choice and helping shape the next generation of commerce in India.”
Delivering a Secure and Private Payment Experience
Security and privacy are at the core of Apple Pay. When customers use a card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device or on Apple servers, nor are they shared by Apple with the merchant. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted, and securely stored in the Secure Element, an industry-standard certified chip designed to store the payment information safely on the device.
Apple does not retain transaction information that can be tied back to the user. Their transactions stay between the user, the merchant, and their bank or card issuer. If a user’s iPhone is lost or stolen, they can use the Find My app to quickly locate, lock, or suspend payments from that device.
How to Use Apple Pay
Apple Pay is easy to set up. Customers can add a card directly to Apple Wallet via the latest version of the Axis Bank app. Alternatively, simply open the Wallet app on iPhone, tap the plus sign, and follow the steps to add an eligible card. Once a user adds a card to their Apple device, they can start using Apple Pay right away.
Using Apple Pay in stores is seamless and easy. Simply double-click the side button or Home button; authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode if prompted; and hold the top of the iPhone or display of the Apple Watch near the contactless reader to pay.
Users can also make purchases with Apple Pay on iPhone and iPad — with support for Mac coming soon — for faster and more convenient payments in apps or on the web without having to create accounts or repeatedly type in contact information, card details, or shipping and billing information.
When using Apple Pay, users will continue to earn the rewards and benefits offered by their cards.
At launch, Apple Pay will be accepted by millions of merchants across India, including at Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Comet, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Le15 Patisserie, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg, Zomato, and more. Apple has worked closely with payment service providers (PSPs) — like BillDesk, Cashfree, Juspay, Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs, Razorpay, and more — to bring Apple Pay to their merchant networks in India, with even more merchants and apps coming over time.
Today Apple Pay is available in more than 90 countries and regions, and works with more than 11,000 bank and network partners worldwide.

Parenting today looks very different from what it used to be. Children step out more, start using phones earlier, and enjoy more independence than ever. At the same time, parents try not to feel overbearing. They want their kids to explore, learn, and grow, while still having the comfort of knowing they’re safe. Jio Safety Shield features are designed exactly for this balance.
Jio Safety Shield offers a simple, thoughtful way to stay connected without hovering, worrying, or breaking your child’s sense of freedom. It brings together practical safety tools that work quietly in the background. With real-time location tracking, movement history, battery updates, and call-control features, it turns a regular Jio phone into a reliable companion for families who want peace of mind with gentle supervision. It would not be wrong to fondly call it Jio Safety Shield parental control!
Here’s how Jio Safety Shield helps parents.
Tells you where your child is without constantly calling
A big relief for parents is knowing where their child is at any moment. Whether they’re walking to school, travelling by bus, attending tuition, or visiting a friend, Jio Safety Shield lets you check their real-time location instantly. You no longer need to call repeatedly to ask, ‘Where have you reached?’ Parents feel reassured, and children feel trusted because they aren’t asked for updates every few minutes. This keeps everyday routines calm and avoids unnecessary stress on both sides.
Gives a clear view of the places your child has been to
Sometimes parents want to understand where their child has been throughout the day, especially when they have multiple classes or activities. Jio Safety Shield’s location history feature shows the route they took, places visited, and time spent at each stop. This helps parents confirm that their child followed their usual routine without going anywhere unexpected. It also removes confusion when schedules change or delays happen, without making children feel watched too closely.
No panic when the phone is unreachable
Every parent knows the worry of calling their child and finding their phone unreachable. Usually, the reason is simple – the battery has died. Jio Safety Shield reduces this panic by showing the phone’s battery status in advance. If the battery is low, you know before the phone switches off. And if it does switch off, you can see that it happened due to a drained battery, not an emergency. It’s a small detail, but it brings huge peace of mind, especially during evening travel or long commutes.
Protection from spam and unknown callers
Children are often unaware of which calls are safe to answer. With Jio Safety Shield, parents can allow only selected contacts for both incoming and outgoing calls. This ensures:
Only trusted people can reach your child
Strangers and spammers are completely blocked
Your child cannot call unknown numbers by mistake
It’s a safe calling environment that helps children use their phones responsibly while removing unnecessary risks.
Safety without being overbearing
What makes Jio Safety Shield truly special is the balance it creates. It gives parents the reassurance they need while respecting the child’s space. There’s no need for constant checking or strict rules. Parents can stay updated quietly, and children can go about their day feeling supported, not controlled. This thoughtful balance of safety and independence is what modern parenting has been looking for. A way to stay close without stepping too far in.
Why parents love Jio Safety Shield
Parents value Jio Safety Shield because it gives them clarity and confidence without complicating their child’s day. They get reliable updates on location, movement, and battery status without interrupting their child with repeated calls. The call-control feature adds another layer of protection by keeping unknown numbers and spam callers out. And because parents understand delays and route changes naturally, everyday communication becomes smoother and more trusting. Overall, Jio Safety Shield helps build independence in children while giving parents peace of mind in a gentle, non-intrusive way.
How to get started
When it comes to the Jio Safety Shield setup, you need:
A Jio device for your child — such as JioBharat V4, B2, A1, V3, or JioPhone Prima 2.
The JioThings app on your own smartphone — this is where you’ll monitor everything.
Once both devices are ready, pair them in the JioThings app. You can then enable real-time tracking, location history, battery alerts, and call restrictions. There’s also a step-by-step video tutorial if you need help.
A smarter, kinder way to protect your children
Jio Safety Shield brings a sense of ease to parenting that many millennial families have long wished for. It gives children the freedom to move through their day with confidence, while giving parents the comfort of staying informed without leaning in too much.
With features that protect, guide, and reassure, Jio Safety Shield makes safety feel natural, not stressful – definitely the best phone safety feature for kids in India. It’s a thoughtful step forward in helping families stay connected, balanced, and confident – every day.
