Christian books Publishers Urge Trump to Not Impose ‘Bible Tax’ in Trade War With China
Book publishers are imploring President Donald Trump not to impose “a Bible tax.’’
Proposed tariffs on $300 billion in Chinese goods would include printed materials, which would especially affect Bibles and children’s books predominantly produced in China because of the unique paper, printing technology and skills needed, company and trade group officials testified during the second day of a seven-day hearing on the proposed duties Tuesday.
“We believe the administration was unaware of the potential negative impact these proposed tariffs would have on Bibles and that it never intended to impose ‘a Bible tax’ on consumers and religious organizations,” Mark Schoenwald, chief executive officer of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, told a panel of officials at the U.S. International Trade Commission.
A 25% tariff would make it difficult to continue printing some formats and raise prices, leading to a Bible shortage that would hurt the Christian bookseller market, as well as ministries, churches, nonprofits and other religious organizations that couldn’t afford them, Schoenwald said.
There also is no viable alternative to the U.S. children’s books printed in China because of the waterproof and nontoxic materials used in some cases, as well as China’s investment in recent decades in needed equipment, said Daniel Reynolds.
“If tariffs are imposed, there will be fewer books available to American kids,” he said.
Publishers try to use U.S. printers when possible, but capacity has become extremely constrained since the 1980s, said M. Luisa Simpson, vice president for global policy at the Association of American Publishers. Because of thin margins in the industry, higher prices would mean some books would be discontinued, publishers might have to scale back, and book stores, schools and libraries would be affected, she said.
Trump has broad political support from evangelical Christians. Publishers are hoping he’ll be receptive to sparing Bibles from tariffs, said Stan Jantz, head of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.
“I know there’s a great interest in the area of religious freedom and access to religious goods on the part of the administration,’’ Jantz said in an interview after his testimony. “We do hope that there would be an openness and strong consideration for Bibles in particular and also for books.’

സിത്താരോ ദ്വീപില്‍ നിന്ന് 838 പേരെയാണ് ഒഴിപ്പിച്ചതെന്നാണ് വിവരം. പർവത ചരിവുകളിലൂടെ ലാവ ഒഴുകുന്ന വീഡിയോകളും പുറത്തുവന്നു. അഗ്നിപർവതം പൊട്ടിത്തെറിക്കുന്നതിന് മുൻപ് നിരവധി ഭൂകമ്ബങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായതായി സൂചനകളുണ്ട്.
27 കോടി ജനങ്ങളുള്ള ദ്വീപസമൂഹമായ ഇന്തോനേഷ്യയിൽ 120 സജീവ അഗ്നിപർവ്വതങ്ങളുണ്ട്. 725 മീറ്റർ (2,378 അടി) യുള്ള റുവാങ് അഗ്നിപർവ്വതത്തിൽ നിന്ന് കുറഞ്ഞത് 6 കിലോമീറ്റർ (3.7 മൈൽ) അകലെ താമസിക്കാൻ അധികൃതർ വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികളോടും ജനങ്ങളോടും അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചു.
2018-ൽ, ഇന്തോനേഷ്യയിലെ അനക് ക്രാകറ്റൗ അഗ്നിപർവ്വതം പൊട്ടിത്തെറിച്ചതിനെത്തുടർന്ന്, സുമാത്ര, ജാവ തീരങ്ങളിൽ സുനാമിയുണ്ടായി 430 പേർ മരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.

As Record Bible Disengagement Rages, Researchers Discover ‘Good Reason For Hope’ If Key Trend Continues
A new survey yielded results that could give Christians a “good reason for hope” when it comes to the Gospel’s impact on young people.
This year, 54% of Gen Z adults (ages 18-27) agreed the Bible’s message has transformed their lives, up from 50% last year.
These results are captured in the first chapter of the 14th annual “State of the Bible Report 2024.”
The increase in support for Scripture’s message left Dr. John Farquhar Plake, chief program officer and editor-in-chief of the State of the Bible, with some hope for the future, despite noting the decrease in Scripture engagement in recent years.
“Our youngest adults show signs of interest in the Bible, curiosity about it, and transformative interaction with it,” Plake said, breaking down the increase in those who say the “message of the Bible has transformed their lives.” “If this trend continues, we have good reason for hope.”
On the negative front, though, the research found “there are more Bible Disengaged Americans than ever.” The State of the Bible found people fall into a number of categories when it comes to Bible engagement: Scripture Engaged, Bible Disengaged, or in the Movable Middle.
Tragically, the survey found 10 million people slid from the middle to the least engaged bucket, amounting to 4% of the total population, according to an overview of results.
“Now 57% of Americans are Bible Disengaged — the highest number in the 14-year history of this survey,” the statement read.
One of the other fascinating finds centers on race. White Americans’ Scripture engagement dropped over the last year to 16%, while black Americans saw their Scripture engagement increase to 28%.
The American Bible Society said black Americans also have higher church attendance and other “measures of spiritual vitality.”
Additional chapters will be released throughout the year, providing a lens into where Americans stand on Bible engagement and faith practices.
