Covid will not be the last epidemic: WHO chief
The coronavirus crisis will not be the last pandemic, and attempts to improve human health are “doomed” without tackling climate change and animal welfare, the World Health Organization’s chief said.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also condemned the “dangerously short-sighted” cycle of throwing cash at outbreaks but doing nothing to prepare for the next one, in a video message marking Sunday’s first International Day of Epidemic Preparedness.
The WHO director-general said it was time to learn the lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic.
“For too long, the world has operated on a cycle of panic and neglect,” he said.
“We throw money at an outbreak, and when it’s over, we forget about it and do nothing to prevent the next one. This is dangerously short-sighted, and frankly difficult to understand.”
The Global Preparedness Monitoring Board’s September 2019 first annual report on world readiness for health emergencies — published a few months before the novel coronavirus broke out — said the planet was woefully unprepared for potentially devastating pandemics.
“History tells us that this will not be the last pandemic, and epidemics are a fact of life,” said Tedros.
“The pandemic has highlighted the intimate links between the health of humans, animals and planet,” he added.
“Any efforts to improve human health are doomed unless they address the critical interface between humans and animals, and the existential threat of climate change that’s making our earth less habitable,” he said.
The novel coronavirus has killed at least 1.75 million people and nearly 80 million cases have been recorded since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP.
“In the past 12 months, our world has been turned upside-down. The impacts of the pandemic go far beyond the disease itself, with far-reaching consequences for societies and economies,” said Tedros.
But the Ethiopian former health minister said the coronavirus crisis should not have come as a surprise, given the repeated warnings.
“We must all learn the lessons the pandemic is teaching us,” he said.
Tedros said all countries should invest in preparedness capacities to prevent, detect and mitigate emergencies of all kinds, and called for stronger primary health care provision.
The UN health agency’s chief said that with investments in public health, “we can ensure that our children and their children inherit a safer, more resilient and more sustainable world”.
The International Day of Epidemic Preparedness was called for by the United Nations General Assembly to promote the importance of prevention, preparedness and partnership in tackling epidemics.
ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി: പനി, ജലദോഷം, അലര്‍ജി, വേദന എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ആന്റി ബാക്ടീരിയല്‍ മരുന്നുകള്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടെ 156 ഫിക്‌സഡ് ഡോസ് കോമ്പിനേഷന്‍ (എഫ്ഡിസി) മരുന്നുകള്‍ കേന്ദ്ര സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ നിരോധിച്ചു. ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 12നാണ് ഇതു സംബന്ധിച്ച് ആരോഗ്യമന്ത്രാലയം ഗസറ്റ് വിജ്ഞാപനം പുറത്തിറക്കിയത്. ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള കോക്ക്ടെയില്‍ മരുന്നുകള്‍ മനുഷ്യര്‍ക്ക് അപകടമുണ്ടാക്കാന്‍ സാധ്യതയുണ്ടെന്ന കാരണത്താലാണ് നിരോധിച്ചത്. വേദന സംഹാരിയായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന അസെക്ലോഫെനാക് 50mg, പാരസെറ്റാമോള്‍ 124 mg എന്നീ കോമ്പിനേഷന്‍ മരുന്നുകളും നിരോധിച്ചവയില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടും.
മെഫെനാമിക് ആസിഡ് പാരസെറ്റമോള്‍ ഇന്‍ജക്ഷന്‍, സെറ്റിറൈസിന്‍ എച്ച്സിഎല്‍ പാരസെറ്റമോള്‍ ഫെനൈലെഫ്രിന്‍ എച്ച്സിഎല്‍, ലെവോസെറ്റിറൈസിന്‍ ഫെനൈലെഫ്രിന്‍ എച്ച്സിഎല്‍ പാരസെറ്റാമോള്‍, പാരസെറ്റാമോള്‍ ക്ലോര്‍ഫെനിറാമൈന്‍ മലേറ്റ് ഫിനൈല്‍ പ്രൊപനോലമൈന്‍, കാമിലോഫിന്‍ ഡൈഹൈഡ്രോക്ലോറൈഡ് 25 മില്ലിഗ്രാം പാരസെറ്റാമോള്‍ 30 എന്നിവയും പട്ടികയില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്നു.
പാരസെറ്റാമോള്‍, ട്രമഡോള്‍, ടോറിന്‍, കഫീന്‍ എന്നിവയുടെ കോമ്പിനേഷനും കേന്ദ്രം നിരോധിച്ചു. ഡ്രഗ്‌സ് ആന്‍ഡ് കോസ്‌മെറ്റിക്‌സ് ആക്ട് 1940-ലെ സെക്ഷന്‍ 26 എ പ്രകാരം ഈ എഫ്ഡിസികളുടെ നിര്‍മ്മാണം, വില്‍പന എന്നിവ നിരോധിക്കേണ്ടത് അത്യാവശ്യമാണെന്നാണ് വിജ്ഞാപനത്തില്‍ പറയുന്നത്. 2016ല്‍ ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ 344 കോമ്പിനേഷന്‍ മരുന്നുകള്‍ കേന്ദ്രം നിരോധിച്ചിരുന്നു.

കുട്ടികളെയും മുതിർന്നവരെയും കൊതിപ്പിക്കുന്നതാണ് സ്മോക്ക് ബിസ്ക്കറ്റുകൾ. വായിൽവെക്കുമ്പോൾ പുകവരുന്ന സ്മോക്ക് ബിസ്ക്കറ്റുകൾ നിരോധിക്കാനൊരുങ്ങുകയാണ് തമിഴ്നാട്. മനുഷ്യജീവനു തന്നെ ഭീഷണിയാകുമെന്ന മുന്നറിയിപ്പാണ് തമിഴ്നാട് ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പ് നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. കുട്ടികൾ ഇത് കഴിക്കുന്നത് ജീവൻ അപകടത്തിലാകാൻ കാരണമാകുമെന്നും ആരോഗ്യവിദഗ്ദർ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നൽകുന്നു. സ്മോക്ക് ബിസ്ക്കറ്റുകൾക്ക് പുറമെ നൈട്രജൻ ഐസ് കലർന്ന ഭക്ഷണങ്ങളും വിൽക്കാൻ പാടില്ലെന്നും നിർദേശം നൽകിയിരിക്കുകയാണ് ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പ്.
ശാരീരിക കോശങ്ങളെ മരവിപ്പിക്കുകയും അന്നനാളത്തെയും ശ്വാസനാളത്തെയും ഗുരുതരമായി ബാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമെന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തിയതിനെ തുടർന്നാണ് സ്മോക്ക് ബിസ്ക്കറ്റുകൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിന് വിലക്കേർപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഭക്ഷണത്തിൽ ഡ്രൈ ഐസ്‌ക്രീം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് 10 വർഷം തടവും 10 ലക്ഷം രൂപ പിഴയും ശിക്ഷ നൽകുമെന്നും ഭക്ഷ്യ സുരക്ഷ വകുപ്പ് അറിയിച്ചു.
സ്മോക്ക് ബിസ്ക്കറ്റുകൾ നിർമിക്കുന്നയിടങ്ങളിൽ പരിശോധന നടത്താൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് നിരോധനം ഏർപ്പെടുത്താനാണ് ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പ് തീരുമാനിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.
ലബോറട്ടറികളിലെ തണുത്ത അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ വസ്തുക്കൾ പ്രൊസസ് ചെയ്യതെടുക്കുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഇത്തരം വസ്തുക്കൾ ആളുകളെ ആകർഷിക്കാൻ സ്മോക്ക് ബിസ്ക്കറ്റുകൾ, സ്മോക്കിങ് പാനുകൾ തുടങ്ങിയ പേരുകളിൽ വിൽക്കുകയാണ്.
നൈട്രജൻ സ്മോക്ക് ബിസ്ക്കറ്റുകൾ കഴിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം കടുത്ത വേദന അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടിയുടെ വീഡിയോ പുറത്തുവന്നതിനു ശേഷമാണ് തമിഴ്നാട് മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നൽകിയത്. പ്രദേശത്തെ ഒരു പരിപാടിക്കിടെ കുട്ടി ഇത് കഴിക്കുകയും ദേഹാസ്വസ്ഥ്യം അനുഭവപ്പെടുകയുമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് ആശുപത്രിയിൽ പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചെങ്കിലും ചികിത്സയിലിരിക്കെ കുട്ടി മരിച്ചിരുന്നു.
