ഒഡീഷയിലും ക്രൈസ്തവർക്ക് നേരെ ആക്രമണം; മലയാളി വൈദികനടക്കം പരിക്കേറ്റു
ബി.ജെ.പി ഭരിക്കുന്ന സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിൽ ക്രൈസ്തവമത വിശ്വാസികൾക്കെതിരായ ആക്രമണങ്ങൾ തുടരുന്നു. ജബൽപൂരിലെ ആക്രമണത്തിന് പിന്നാലെ ഒഡീഷയിൽ മലയാളി വൈദികൻ പൊലീസിൽ നിന്ന് ക്രൂരമായ മർദനം നേരിട്ടതാണ് അതിൽ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ വാർത്ത.
ഒഡീഷയിലെ ബഹറാംപൂർ രൂപതയിലെ ജൂബ ഇടവക പള്ളി വികാരിയായ ഫാ. ജോഷി ജോർജിന് നേരെയാണ് ആക്രമണമുണ്ടായത്. ഒഡീഷയിലെ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ കഞ്ചാവ് പരിശോധനക്ക് എത്തിയതായിരുന്നു പൊലീസ്. പിന്നാലെ പള്ളിയിൽ കയറി ആക്രമണം നടത്തുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്നാണ് പരാതി.
പാകിസ്താനിൽ നിന്ന് വന്ന് മതപരിവർത്തനം നടത്തുന്നുവെന്നാരോപിച്ചായിരുന്നു ക്രൂര മർദനം. പള്ളിയിൽ നിന്ന് പണം അപഹരിച്ചുവെന്നും സഹവികാരിക്ക് ഗുരുതര പരിക്കേറ്റതായും ജോഷി ജോർജ് പറയുന്നു. മാർച്ച് 22ന് നടന്ന സംഭവത്തിന്റെ വിവരങ്ങളാണ് ഇപ്പോൾ പുറത്തുവന്നത്. സമീപത്ത് കഞ്ചാവ് പരിശോധനക്ക് എത്തിയ പൊലീസ് ഇടവകയിലേക്ക് കയറി വന്ന് പള്ളിയിലെ പെൺകുട്ടികളെ പൊലീസ് അടിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോഴാണ് ഫാ. ജോഷി ജോർജും സഹവികാരിയും പൊലീസിന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് ചെന്നത്. പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിയതിന് പിന്നാലെ പൊലീസ് ഇവരെ മർദിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അടുത്ത ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോയി അധിക്ഷേപങ്ങൾ ചൊരിഞ്ഞ് മർദനം തുടരുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്നും ഫാ. ജോഷി ജോർജ് പറയുന്നു. മർദനം സംബന്ധിച്ച് ഇരുവരും നിയമനടപടികളിലേക്ക് നീങ്ങിയിട്ടില്ല.

In a shocking incident, police officers attacked Juba Parish of Berhampur Diocese in Odisha on March 22, brutally assaulting priests and looting the church. The assault followed a raid in a nearby village a day earlier, during which police searched homes for ganja and arrested several villagers. The church, however, had no connection to the illegal trade and had consistently advised against it in its teachings.
In an interview with Catholic Connect, Fr. Joshi George clarified, “The church has nothing to do with it. In fact, we preach in homilies multiple times, advising the villagers to not engage in such trade. Unfortunately, some continue as it gives them monetary benefit.”
According to Fr. Joshi, the Parish Priest of Juba Parish and a victim of the attack, the officers suddenly arrived on March 22 and began beating whoever they found in the Church and Presbytery. The priest shared his story in an interview with the local Odia news outlet, Samartha News.
At the time of the incident, a few young girls were cleaning the church, as is customary in preparation for the next day, Sunday Mass. Suddenly, the officers entered the church and started assaulting the young girls. Among them, three girls shouted, “Father! Father!” and ran toward the presbytery, calling for help.
Inside, Fr. Joshi and his assistant priest, Fr. Dayanand, were resting. As soon as they came out, one officer asked them, “Who are you?” While the priests were introducing themselves, the officers started beating them both.
The Parish Priest and his assistant were severely beaten. They were dragged into the street, insulted with filthy language, and humiliated. The officers accused them, saying, “You are Pakistanis! You have come here to convert people to Christianity and are spreading bad teachings among them!” They then confiscated the Parish Priest’s mobile phone, telling him, “We will return it after two days.”
The priests denied the allegations, stating that they were not converting anyone or spreading false teachings but rather providing good education to the people. However, the officers ignored their words and continued to beat them, with Fr. Dayanand suffering the most. He was brutally hit on the head and shoulders, leaving him seriously injured.
“We wanted to take him to the hospital that evening, but out of fear, we could not,” said Fr. Joshi. “The next day, we took him to Berhampur Medical College Hospital.”
The X-ray report confirmed that Fr. Dayanand’s shoulder bone was fractured. Physically and emotionally devastated, the priest suffered not only from his injuries but also from the trauma—on what was supposed to be his birthday.
After dragging the priests to the street, the officers entered the presbytery. They sat in the dining room, drank water, entered the priests’ bedrooms, and even looted ₹40,000 from the Parish Priest’s office.
“They falsely accused us, insulted us with cruel and filthy language, and persecuted us both physically and mentally,” Fr. Joshi said. “We never expected such treatment from officers.”
When the Parish Priest questioned them, asking, “Why are you beating us?” they could not provide any reason. He continued, “We condemn this brutal act and urge that no priest, church institution, or Christian should ever face such attacks again.”
The officers also threatened the priest, saying, “We will take you to the Mohana Police Station. You will stay there, and no one will be able to help you.”
In response, Fr. Joshi firmly told them, “I have committed no mistake to be taken to the police station. If I have done anything wrong, state it clearly.”
“I have shared our suffering and pain with my authorities. They will take the necessary steps. Regardless, I will continue my priestly service in this parish.”
He further stated to Catholic Connect, “We are in the season of Lent, and it is a reminder of the suffering of Christ. We forgive them for the injustice done to us without proper enquiry.” He added, “We also request the police administration to not engage in such acts without any evidence.”

Church leaders have welcomed a ruling by a provincial top court in southern India allowing a Christian woman to seek dissolution of her marriage in a family court where she currently resides after moving out of her matrimonial home.
The Kerala High Court’s Aug. 19 ruling came on an appeal filed by a Christian woman seeking legal separation from her husband due to domestic violence.
The woman, who resides at her parental home in Kerala state’s Wayanad district, had challenged a family court order directing her to file her application in Kasargod district, where her estranged husband and his family live.

The British-era Indian Divorce Act of 1869, which governs judicial separation and marriage dissolution, among other things, for Christians in India, makes it mandatory for women to approach a family court in the place where “the marriage was solemnized, or the husband and wife reside or last resided together.”
In her appeal to the High Court, the Christian woman argued that this restriction resulted “in serious prejudice to Christian women who intend to file for divorce.”
The woman had earlier challenged the family court order before a single bench of the Kerala High Court on the grounds that she was not in a position “to travel long distances, in protracted litigations in a hostile jurisdiction.”
She pointed out that women were allowed to approach family courts where they resided under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, as well as the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which enables marriages between individuals of any religion, caste, or nationality, but not under the law governing Christian marriages.
The single-judge bench, in a June 30 ruling, agreed with her contentions but refused to grant her relief, holding that amending the law was the only solution and leaving it to the Indian Parliament to decide.
The judge, however, directed that the order be sent to the federal government, recommending it to amend the 1869 law.
The High Court’s division bench of Justices A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Preeta A K, whom she approached later, allowed her appeal.
It ruled that she could file her application before a family court “having jurisdiction over the place where she is currently residing, even if that place is different from where the marriage was solemnized or where the couple last lived together.”
Church leaders hailed this Aug. 19 ruling as a “landmark decision” based on “a wise interpretation of a contentious clause.”
Father Ebigin Arackal, secretary to the Commission for Canon Law of the Kerala Region Latin Catholic Bishops’ Council, said, “We are glad that the top court, through its wise interpretation of a contentious clause, has ended decades-old discrimination against Christian women.”
Aleykutty P T, a lawyer in Kerala’s Idukki district, said Christian women were often forced to travel to places where their husbands were based, which made them insecure and sometimes even posed a threat to their lives.
“Now with this order, they can obviously choose a place where it’s safer and they get support,” she told UCA News on Aug. 20.
Govind Yadav, a lawyer at the Supreme Court in New Delhi, said this order for Kerala can become a precedent for other states to follow.
“But as long as the federal government fails to amend the colonial-era law, this discrimination against Christian women will continue,” he added.
Christians make up 2.3 percent of India’s more than 1.4 billion people; about 80 percent of whom are Hindus.
