Great conjunction: Jupiter, Saturn to come close on Dec 21
Skywatchers are in for an end-of-year treat. What has become known popularly as the “Christmas Star” is an especially vibrant planetary conjunction easily visible in the evening sky over the next two weeks as the bright planets Jupiter and Saturn come together, culminating on the night of Dec. 21.
In 1610, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei pointed his telescope to the night sky, discovering the four moons of Jupiter – Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. In that same year, Galileo also discovered a strange oval surrounding Saturn, which later observations determined to be its rings. These discoveries changed how people understood the far reaches of our solar system.
Thirteen years later, in 1623, the solar system’s two giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn, traveled together across the sky. Jupiter caught up to and passed Saturn, in an astronomical event known as a “Great Conjunction.”
“You can imagine the solar system to be a racetrack, with each of the planets as a runner in their own lane and the Earth toward the center of the stadium,” said Henry Throop, astronomer in the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “From our vantage point, we’ll be able to be to see Jupiter on the inside lane, approaching Saturn all month and finally overtaking it on December 21.”
The planets regularly appear to pass each other in the solar system, with the positions of Jupiter and Saturn being aligned in the sky about once every 20 years.
What makes this year’s spectacle so rare, then? It’s been nearly 400 years since the planets passed this close to each other in the sky, and nearly 800 years since the alignment of Saturn and Jupiter occurred at night, as it will for 2020, allowing nearly everyone around the world to witness this “great conjunction.”
The closest alignment will appear just a tenth of a degree apart and last for a few days. On the 21st, they will appear so close that a pinkie finger at arm’s length will easily cover both planets in the sky. The planets will be easy to see with the unaided eye by looking toward the southwest just after sunset.
From our vantage point on Earth the huge gas giants will appear very close together, but they will remain hundreds of millions of miles apart in space. And while the conjunction is happening on the same day as the winter solstice, the timing is merely a coincidence, based on the orbits of the planets and the tilt of the Earth.
“Conjunctions like this could happen on any day of the year, depending on where the planets are in their orbits,” said Throop. “The date of the conjunction is determined by the positions of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth in their paths around the Sun, while the date of the solstice is determined by the tilt of Earth’s axis. The solstice is the longest night of the year, so this rare coincidence will give people a great chance to go outside and see the solar system.”

89,000 വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുമ്പ് കോസി നദി അരുണ്‍ നദിയുമായി ലയിച്ചതോടെ എവറസ്റ്റിന് ഏകദേശം 49-164 അടി (1,550 മീറ്റര്‍) ഉയരം ലഭിച്ചുവെന്ന് ഗവേഷകര്‍ അനുമാനിക്കുന്നു. നദികള്‍ കാലക്രമേണ ഗതി മാറിയതിനാല്‍ കോസി അരുണിനെ കീഴടക്കുകയും ത്വരിതഗതിയിലുള്ള മണ്ണൊലിപ്പിന് കാരണമാകുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഓരോ വര്‍ഷവും ഏകദേശം 0.01-0.02 ഇഞ്ച് (0.20.5 മില്ലിമീറ്റര്‍) എന്ന തോതില്‍ എവറസ്റ്റ് വളരുകയാണ്. ഈ ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രപരമായ പ്രക്രിയയെ ഐസോസ്റ്റാറ്റിക് റീബൗണ്ട് എന്നാണ് ശാസ്ത്രലോകം വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ പ്രക്രിയ എവറസ്റ്റിനടുത്തുള്ള പ്രദേശത്തെ ഭാരം കുറയാന്‍ കാരണമായെന്നാണ് ബീജിംഗിലെ ചൈന യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഓഫ് ജിയോസയന്‍സസിലെ ജിയോ സയന്റിസ്റ്റ് ജിന്‍-ജെന്‍ ഡായ് പറയുന്നത്. ഭൗമോപരിതലത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ഐസോ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഉരുകിയ പാറകള്‍പോലുള്ള കനത്ത ഭാരം നീക്കം ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ അതിനടിയിലുള്ള ഭൂമി പതുക്കെ ഉയരുമെന്നും ഡായ് കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്‍ത്തു.
എവറസ്റ്റിന്റെ വാര്‍ഷിക ഉയര്‍ച്ച നിരക്കിന്റെ ഏകദേശം 10% ഐസോസ്റ്റാറ്റിക് റീബൗണ്ട് ആണെന്ന് കണക്കാക്കുന്നു. മണ്ണൊലിപ്പ് തുടരുന്നതിനാല്‍, ഐസോസ്റ്റാറ്റിക് റീബൗണ്ട് കാരണമുള്ള എവറസ്റ്റിന്റെ ഉയര്‍ച്ച നിരക്ക് ഇനിയും വര്‍ധിച്ചേക്കാം. ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ഉപഭൂഖണ്ഡം ഏകദേശം 50 ദശലക്ഷം വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുമ്പ് യുറേഷ്യയുമായി കൂട്ടിയിടിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് എവറസ്റ്റ് ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്ന ഹിമാലയന്‍ പര്‍വതനിരകള്‍ ജന്മമെടുത്തത്.

ന്യൂയോര്‍ക്ക്: ഭൂമിയെ ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ട് സൗരക്കാറ്റ് എത്തുന്നുവെന്ന് നാസ. ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് ആശയവിനിമ സംവിധാനങ്ങളെ പ്രതികൂലമായി ബാധിക്കുമെന്നും അമേരിക്കന്‍ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞര്‍. ഇന്ത്യയിലും സോളാര്‍ കൊടുങ്കാറ്റ് ബാധിക്കുമെന്നാണ് ശാസ്ത്രലോകം പറയുന്നത്.
വരാനിരിക്കുന്ന സോളാര്‍ കൊടുങ്കാറ്റ് ടെലികമ്മ്യൂണിക്കേഷനെയും ഉപഗ്രഹങ്ങളെയും തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തിയേക്കാമെന്ന് ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ആസ്‌ട്രോഫിസിക്‌സിലെ ഡയറക്ടര്‍ ഡോ.അന്നപൂര്‍ണി സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞര്‍ ഇത് നിരീക്ഷിച്ച് വരികയാണെന്നും ആവശ്യമായ മുന്‍കരുതലുകള്‍ സ്വീകരിക്കാന്‍ ഉപഗ്രഹ ഓപ്പറേറ്റര്‍മാരോട് നിര്‍ദേശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നും ഇസ്രോയിലെ വിദഗ്ധര്‍ അറിയിച്ചു.
വരുന്ന കുറച്ച് ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ ഭൂമിക്ക് നിര്‍ണായകമാണ്. സൗരക്കാറ്റ് ഭൂമിയില്‍ പതിക്കാന്‍ കുറച്ച് ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ എടുക്കും. കാന്തികമണ്ഡലത്തില്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും തരത്തിലുള്ള ഇടപെടല്‍ ഉണ്ടാകാനുള്ള സാധ്യതയുണ്ടെന്ന് ഡോ.അന്നപൂര്‍ണി പറഞ്ഞു. സൂര്യനില്‍ നിന്ന് സൗരയൂഥത്തിലേക്ക് കണങ്ങളും കാന്തികക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും മറ്റ് വസ്തുക്കളും പൊട്ടിത്തെറിച്ചുണ്ടാകുന്ന സ്‌ഫോടനത്തെയാണ് സൗരക്കാറ്റ് എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നത്.
സൗരക്കാറ്റ് ഭൂമിയെ ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ടെത്തുമ്പോള്‍ ഭൂമിയുടെ കാന്തികമണ്ഡലത്തില്‍ ജിയോമാഗ്‌നെറ്റിക് കൊടുങ്കാറ്റ് എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് വൈദ്യുതിബന്ധം നിലയ്ക്കാനും ആശയവിനിമയ സംവിധാനങ്ങളെ തകരാറിലാക്കാനും കാരണമാകും. അറോറകളും ദൃശ്യമാകും. ഭൂമിയുടെ കാന്തിക മണ്ഡലവും അന്തരീക്ഷവും സൗരക്കാറ്റില്‍ നിന്ന് സംരക്ഷണം നല്‍കുന്നതിനാല്‍ തന്നെ ഇവ ഭൂമിയിലെ ജീവജാലങ്ങളെ നേരിട്ട് ബാധിക്കില്ലെന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധയേമാണ്.
ഇക്കഴിഞ്ഞ മെയ് മാസത്തില്‍ ഭൂമിയില്‍ പതിച്ച സൗരക്കാറ്റിന്റെ ഫലമായി വടക്കന്‍ അര്‍ദ്ധഗോളത്തില്‍ ഉടനീളം അറോറ ഡിസ്‌പ്ലേകള്‍ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചിരുന്നു. സൗരകണങ്ങള്‍ ഭൂമിയുടെ അന്തരീക്ഷവുമായി ഇടപഴകുമ്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന പ്രകാശത്തെയാണ് അറോറ ഡിസ്‌പ്ലേ എന്നുവിളിക്കുന്നത്.

നാസയുടെ ധനസഹായത്തോടെയുള്ള ഛിന്നഗ്രഹ നിരീക്ഷണ സംവിധാനമായ ആസ്റ്ററോയ്ഡ് ടെറസ്ട്രിയല്‍-ഇംപാക്റ്റ് ലാസ്റ്റ് അലര്‍ട്ട് സിസ്റ്റത്തിലെ ഗവേഷകര്‍, ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയിലെ സതര്‍ലാന്‍ഡില്‍ സ്ഥാപിച്ച നിരീക്ഷണ സംവിധാനങ്ങള്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് ഛിന്നഗ്രഹത്തെ കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. ഇതിനെ 2024 PT5 എന്നാണ് പേരിട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്.
ഓരോ വര്‍ഷവും ചെറുതും വലുതുമായ ഒട്ടേറെ ഛിന്നഗ്രഹങ്ങള്‍ ഭൂമിയുടെ ഭ്രമണപഥത്തിന് സമീപത്തുകൂടി കടന്നു പോകാറുണ്ട്. പക്ഷേ 2024 പിറ്റി5 ഭൂമിയുടെ ഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണ ബലത്താല്‍ ആകര്‍ഷിക്കപ്പെടുമെന്നതാണ് പ്രത്യേകത.
ഭൂമിയുടെ ഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെടാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത ഛിന്നഗ്രഹത്തെ ‘മിനി മൂണ്‍’ എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു. അതേസമയം ഛിന്നഗ്രഹം 2024 PT5 സാങ്കേതികമായി ഒരു ചെറിയ ചന്ദ്രനല്ലെന്നും, കാരണം അത് ഭൂമിയെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ഒരു പൂര്‍ണ്ണ ഭ്രമണം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കുന്നില്ലെന്നും ഗവേഷകര്‍ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെടുന്നു.
എന്തായാലും ഭൂമിയുടെ ഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണ ബലത്താല്‍ ആകര്‍ഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഛിന്നഗ്രഹം കാണുന്നത് വളരെ അപൂര്‍വമാണ്. മിക്ക സംഭവങ്ങളിലും ഛിന്നഗ്രഹങ്ങള്‍ ഭൂമിയെ കടന്നുപോകുകയോ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തില്‍ പ്രവേശിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ കത്തുകയോ ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് പതിവ്.
